The chance of winning the Staatsloterij is that big

Every year I dare to try again and I have literally never won anything. And every year I think again: I might as well make a pot with the money I spend on those tickets every year instead of buying new ones. But then again: what if you miss that big win? I don't want to take that risk either. Just watch, I'll probably win in the year that I skip it for the first time. Well, maybe you can tell a bit: I have quite a weakness for gambling, so yes, I'm participating again this year with a New Year's ticket from the Staatsloterij. But, how big is the chance really that I win?

People often say that the chance is even ‘greater that you get hit by a car’ and that's true. Because the chance is really very, very, VERY small. RTL Nieuws even calculated that the chance of guessing the PIN code of a found debit card within three tries is over 2000 times greater. Okay, bad news for tonight then.

Last year, no less than 7.1 million (7,081,000) tickets were sold for the New Year's draw. That means the chance of winning that jackpot is one in 7.08 million, or… 0.00000014.

Fun: RTL Nieuws also pointed out that we have a better chance of other things than winning this draw, like being struck by lightning. Finding a pearl in your oyster. HA! I've had that before. Multiple times even. Shit, have I already used up all my luck?

Now I have to honestly say that this is about that ultimate jackpot, but, with a few thousand euros we would be happy too, right? We're not the hardest to please.
