Harry did not have suicidal thoughts

Harry and Meghan

With everything about Harry and Meghan, I do get a bit excited. There is simply no republican in me. Anyway, there was now a push notification from RTL Nieuws with the headline that Meghan taught Harry how to deal with suicidal thoughts. So I immediately thought: Harry also had suicidal thoughts, just like Meghan. But no, that was actually a headline meant to entice me to click through. I won't say anything more about it, that's just how it works and in the vast sea of news, sometimes you have to put up an extra balloon to be read. But what exactly is going on?

Well, Harry has recorded a series for Apple+ with Oprah Winfrey; The Me You Can’t See, and in it he talks about the suicidal thoughts that Meghan had and how difficult he found it to listen to that and respond appropriately.

In their case, such conversations are difficult to time, they had to do so right after she shared her greatest fear at an event where a hedge of photographers was waiting for them and they constantly squeezed each other's hands as a sign of: I am here for you.

Now he would have approached it differently, he says. Taking the time and listening are the most important things when someone tells you about their suicidal thoughts. Being there and listening may be more important than wanting to understand or solve, is the lesson Meghan has taught him.

So Harry shares that with Oprah. I am glad that I misinterpreted the headline and that Harry himself, despite the tough time he has also endured, has managed to retain his zest for life.

And I also hope that their good conversations have brought Meghan back into balance completely.
