Much love to Ruud

Ruud de Wild

The sad news about Ruud's illness hits like a bomb. Colon cancer, bam out of nowhere. The radio DJ heard it a few months ago and is now taking a radio break to recover.

‘A few months ago, I was diagnosed with colon cancer,’ Ruud said yesterday during his show De Wild in de Middag on NPO Radio 2. ‘Because I caught it early, they were able to help me quickly. Unfortunately, not everything is gone and I need to be operated on again.’ After this procedure, he will need to recover for three months. ‘I am blessed with the very best doctors. For now, it's time to pause and wait for the operation. I hope to be back soon, you’re not rid of me yet!’

Where he found the strength to make radio all those months (after already having been operated on once) his colleagues also call Character with a capital K. I read it, and it makes me sad. Not strange, I think, because at the moment someone shares such news, you are jolted awake again. How unpredictable life can be and how grateful you should be for good health.

Via Instagram Stories, Olcay responds on behalf of her friend to the messages. ‘Thank you for all your lovely messages about Ruud. He is incredibly impressed by all your support and love. I will take good care of him and keep you updated.’ Love Ruud, I don’t know you personally, but from the stories of your colleagues and girlfriend, it sounds like you are a true warrior. Wishing you lots of recovery and love in the coming time. I hope you can soon do what you love most: entertaining people with stories. Because you can do that like no one else.
