Proven: messy people are happier than tidy types

messy people are happier

Is your life always a mess of misery? Is making a mess your middle name? Are you fond of everything except cleaning up and tidying, so to speak? Then you are probably blissfully happy.

Because the true messy person is all the happier in life, new research shows. Being a stressed-out cleaning rabbit? That wouldn't be good for you at all. Logical, of course. Because those who are always panicking about cleaning and that everything must look perfect at home enjoy much less of the other little things in life. The mess maker is more creative and simply a happier person. They worry less.

Shame on me
Philosopher Dr. Eric Abrahamson, professor of Management at Columbia University and author of the book A Perfect Mess, researched this. Because there are quite a few mess makers, it turns out. Two-thirds of people say they find themselves ‘not so tidy’. But well, we are also a bit ashamed of that. We feel that we are ‘failing’. Recognizable, because even in my bedroom there is sometimes a Mount Everest of clothes and then I think: crap, I can't keep anything in this household in order. Oops.

Emptiness?
But being messy may seem like something to be ashamed of, that is no longer the case. Those who can let things be without obsessively having to clean every speck of dust are actually more positive in life. What are you worried about, when that dishwasher has been overflowing with clean dishes for a day and you don't feel like cramming everything into those cabinets? Exactly. Just make that mess and live your life. Do your work. Go drink wine with a friend. Tidying up and having a spick and span house always seems like the holy grail, while Albert Einstein, who was himself quite chaotic, once said: ‘If a messy desk is a sign of a messy mind, what does an empty desk signify?’

Nice food for thought, huh? Chaotics are the ones with whom you exactly have that little too expensive glass of wine drink too much, with whom you laugh extra hard, with whom you experience something. Enjoy it if you are one. I'm just going to put some clothes on my pile, brb.
