This will be your new true crime addiction

The makers of “The Ted Bundy Tapes” are back and I am very happy about that. The series is called, nice and simple, Crime Scene and covers a different mystery in each season. The first season, which will be available from February 10, deals with — for a true crime fan — a very well-known case: that of Elisa Lam from 2013.

Does that name sound familiar? Then you may have seen the footage from the security cameras: a young woman who seems very confused and steps into the elevator of a hotel. She hesitates, walks back and forth a few times outside the elevator, looks around — as if she sees or is looking for someone — and nervously presses all the buttons. And those are the last images where the young woman Elisa Lam is seen alive.

Fortunately, she was found. Less fortunately was the location: she was found lifeless in the water tank. As in: the water tank from which water comes that people actually drink. Yes, that is very disgusting and especially very grim. But the question was of course how on earth she ended up there. You wouldn't easily be able to open the door of that large water tank by yourself. Was she that strong? And was this her plan, to commit suicide this way? Drowning yourself is not a very common way to do that. Or did she no longer manage to climb out of the water tank?

This mystery is surrounded by so many questions and uncertainties. I personally believe that Elisa Lam had untreated mental health issues (she had been on medication before, but had stopped taking it) and that she may have acted in a psychosis. In any case, not with a clear mind. Many people are convinced of this, but others think there is more going on. That she was possessed, or perhaps was fleeing from someone. Perhaps that person threw her into that water tank.

These theories are also fueled because the hotel itself was already quite notorious. Richard Ramirez, also known as the Night Stalker (there is now also a documentary about him on Netflix — a very grim guy) also stayed there.

The first season will be entirely about the mystery surrounding Elisa Lam, so I guess everything will be investigated in detail. Quite fun and very interesting. Can you have a favorite mystery or does that sound very psycho? Because I find the puzzles surrounding this young woman extremely interesting. What the second season will be about is still unknown, but of course I hope for another sensational case. Fingers crossed.
