Living in Puglia for €1

Living in Puglia

It is my dream to one day live in Greece, but I even started to doubt this offer in Italy. You can now buy a fixer-upper in the city of Taronto in Puglia for just one euro.

Something is too good to be true if it feels too good to be true, which of course also applies to the euro houses in Taranto. The houses in the center of the port city are in need of renovation, and if you cross the bridge with the symbolic euro, you must also start renovating within two months. Furthermore, the building permit must be submitted within a year, and a year after issuance, everything must be ready. Additionally, it is a must to live in the city, and you must secure a deposit of 100K to comply with everything. Quite a list of requirements, but if you are into quick renovations and have nothing against emigrating, then I see opportunities.

Before we all move, you naturally want to know a bit more about your new hometown. Taranto is thus a port city in Puglia. If you want to know how nice Puglia is, you only need to read this piece by May.  Taranto is located right in the corner of the heel of Italy. In front of the door are the Cheradi islands, where apparently there are plenty of dolphins. So much for the charming part, because Taranto is currently mainly a trading port and naval city with quite a few factories that cause significant air pollution.

Now it is true that the mayor of the city primarily prioritizes ecological perspectives in the renovation of the available houses. The change has therefore begun. Air pollution must decrease, and the depopulation of the city must stop. If you look at Taranto from its good side, you see the charm of an Italian city and understand why it was once a hotspot for poets and writers. The city dates back to the eighth century BC and is therefore rich in history. Besides the fact that Taranto is popular for industry, it is also the home port of many fishermen. If you like contrasts, then this might be something for you.
