8x teachers that we all know

types of teachers we all recognize

In my rather diverse career, I spent a year (a real record, yes) as a Dutch teacher in the classroom. At the high school. It felt quite strange to return as a teacher. From day one, I was immediately addressed as ‘madam’ by students who seemed just as old as I was. Very awkward all of it. Suddenly, I also had to deal with all sorts of different types of teachers that I still recognized from the past.

Some teachers are fantastic and can really make your time in high school. Others stick with you because they were hell on earth. Some were hilarious and others incredibly boring. Strict or just the opposite. I actually don't really know what type of teacher I was myself. A mix between chaotic and nice maybe? I'm sure you all recognize the different types of teachers below.

1. The mother/father figure

Strict but fair. We all had a mom or dad as a teacher. Whether it was subject-related or a life lesson: in these lessons, you often learned something real. And did you look tired or a bit sick? This teacher would notice immediately. Often, you would get a comment like ‘Are you taking it easy?’ to take home. We still miss these people and would love to have them back in our lives.

2. The teacher who NEVER had control

After my first day of teaching, I immediately regretted my behavior towards some teachers during my own high school years. This category consists of different subcategories. For example, there is the very young insecure newcomer who can be made to cry even by a first-year class. But my personal favorite: the older teacher without a backbone, who could always persuade you to watch a movie during class. A lesson from the teacher without control: by far the most entertaining lesson of the day.

3. The teacher obsessed with his/her subject

Usually, this teacher could transfer his/her enthusiasm to you. This teacher lives for his/her subject. This often works well with a subject like history, where exciting and captivating stories are told. With a subject like English, I always found this less so. Those enthusiastic teachers who only answer questions in English. As soon as you asked something in Dutch, you were simply ignored or got back: ‘English, please!’

4. The creepy teacher

There were always a few creepers among them. Those teachers often went just over the line with their comments. They would often let their hand linger on your shoulder as they walked by or look at you very intensely. Very unpleasant.

5. The very peculiar teacher

This could be anything. From the math teacher with a terrible coffee breath to the teacher with sadistic humor. These teachers clearly enjoyed their position of power. You often wondered why he/she had chosen this profession in the first place. These lessons were hell.

6. The teacher who wanted to be cool

A teacher who suddenly started using words like swag, dude, or yo. A bit awkward and often dressed just a bit too youthful. In my opinion, they often preferred to be a student rather than a teacher and tried everything to achieve that. They often came up with comments like: ‘I didn't like this either when I was younger, so I understand you.’ This, of course, backfires completely. Students see right through this and consider this type desperate.

7. The hot teacher

Every school had a hot teacher. During these lessons, everyone suddenly paid a lot of attention. Logical too: this teacher was so attractive that you just wanted to stare. No matter what subject he taught, you just did your best.

8. The teacher who hated YOU

To this day, you don't know why. This teacher just decided to hate you. Everyone could talk and have fun, except you. You were always addressed or sent out. Some teachers just had it in for you, and that was tough luck for you. Of course, this hatred was mutual.
