This is the golden trick against heartburn

heartburn

Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the gourmands at online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our cheffies serve you: Heartburn? Try this trick.

Had a nice meal, maybe a bite too much, and then you lie awake at night with heartburn. Sound familiar? A medical researcher from AMC knows what you can do about it.

Don't eat raw onions, take it easy with garlic, stay away from the spicy curry; all dishes that can cause your stomach acid to act up. Quitting smoking, another tip. And raise the head of your bed a little, worth a try. But medical researcher Jeroen Schuitenmaker from AMC has done research and came up with a practical solution: sleeping on your left side. His dissertation shows that people who sleep on their left side have less trouble with stomach acid.

Esophagus
On average, we experience heartburn, describes Schuitenmaker. A small group of people, about 5 percent, even has reflux and that unpleasant burning sensation every day. Heartburn means that a bit of stomach content comes back into the esophagus, that's that nasty feeling.

Extra tip
Not eating before you go to sleep, quitting smoking, and losing a few kilos, those are usually the tips that general practitioners give when people complain about heartburn. According to researcher Schuitenmaker, the tip to especially sleep on your left side should be added to that.
