This is the salary that occurs most frequently in the Netherlands

Woman at work

I always find it super interesting to peek into someone else's household budget. What do you earn, gross, net? What do you do on the side? What do you pay for your fixed expenses?

Isn't it fascinating to see how others do it? Now it has been researched what the most common salary is in the Netherlands. So you can immediately check if you are far below or far above it. Note: this is the salary that occurs most frequently in the Netherlands, not the average income of all workers combined. So this is not an average, it is purely the amount that most Dutch people receive monthly in their account.

According to figures from the Central Planning Bureau (CPB), the modal income in 2022 in the Netherlands is 38,000 euros gross, including holiday pay. Monthly, this amounts to a gross salary of 3,167 euros, which is about 2,500 euros net. No holiday pay, do you not have the right to that yet or something? Excluding holiday pay, the modal income in 2022 is 2,932 euros gross (= 2,369 euros net). Are you around this number with this salary? Then you are an average Dutch person. If you earn more, then you earn more than most Dutch people.

And from that salary, we Dutch people save quite diligently. I prefer to spend it on white Gucci loafers, but okay. The average savings in the Netherlands is 42,000 euros. That seems like a lot and it is, but that is because the average is significantly raised by the wealthy of the country. If they, let's say for convenience, have half a million, then you understand that the average shoots up. There are also plenty of Dutch people who have saved only a few thousand euros, you know. Because yes, there are also so many nice things to buy. And that monthly salary is nice for the fixed expenses, but yes... Sometimes you just want to do something fun and buy something beautiful. That is certainly allowed. Just do it. In moderation. Save again properly next month, okay?
