Those who like to talk to themselves are really smart

You know them, those people who are happily mumbling to themselves no matter what they are doing. Or maybe you do it yourself without even realizing it.

Is the door locked?
But now scientific research shows that this is actually a good sign, that you are just rambling to yourself. Because that would be a sign of intelligence. When you talk to yourself, you are essentially training your brain. Especially if you have been doing it since you were young. Researchers noticed that children those who verbalized their thoughts had more focus and mastered small tasks much better and faster, such as tying their shoelaces.

Talking to yourself helps you concentrate, ignore distractions, and keeps you calmer, psychologists say. It also helps you remember things better: for example, if you are afraid that you didn't close the door properly, it helps to tell yourself: ‘The door is locked.’ This way, you are less likely to forget that you really locked it. It also helps in solving a problem. Suppose you are just not feeling great and you don't know for a moment. Just sit down and chat with yourself.

Always wanted to do
Ask yourself some questions and provide answers. What do I want to do tomorrow? What do I want to do in a year? You will definitely gain more self-insight from it, and that can be relieving. You don't always have to talk to someone else to know what the best choice is. You often already know, but sometimes you can't quite figure it out in the busyness of your thoughts. Talking out loud to yourself helps a lot in that case. Just like it motivates: you pep yourself up with a little me-talk. I can do this! or: If I don't do it now, when will I? Just say: If I never try, it will never work. You will immediately feel excited about what you have always wanted to do but never did.
