Why women can drive better than men

2 women are sitting in the car laughing with each other

‘Bet you there’s a woman behind the wheel?’ my friend always shouts when we get cut off by a car. You can't get me angrier than that. What does this even mean? As if women can't drive, I find that such nonsense. I'm overjoyed when we see in such a situation that we were just cut off by a man. ‘I really think that’s a man,’ I respond while trying to suppress my big grin.

Moreover, I feel much safer when I’m behind the wheel myself than sitting next to my friend in the passenger seat. He tears down the road like a madman and I'm always just glad when we arrive at our destination in one piece. I am absolutely convinced that women are much more suited to be behind the wheel than men. To support this, I even found a study that provides hard evidence for this. Let’s finally say goodbye to the prejudice about women behind the wheel once and for all.

1. Women drive more cautiously

We women drive a lot more cautiously than men. We don’t tear down the road like madmen without checking our mirrors. No, no, we drive controlled and can better adjust our speed to the situation. This is shown by research from the Vias Institute which indicates that women are less involved in serious road accidents than men. In accidents involving a male driver, there is twice as often a fatal outcome than when a woman is behind the wheel. That says more than enough, right?

2. We wear our seatbelts properly and are less likely to get injured

The same research shows that 90.4 percent of men wear their seatbelt, while for women it’s 93.5 percent. Well, that’s really a higher percentage. This partly contributes to the fact that women are less often injured in traffic. Women make up only 44 percent of the light injuries, 34 percent of the serious injuries, and just 23 percent of the traffic fatalities.

3. Women are less likely to drive drunk

The chance that a woman passes a positive breath test is only four times smaller than for a man. Well, what can I say; this undoubtedly has to do with our brains that apparently can think just a bit better about the consequences of such actions.

4. We feel more responsibility

Women adhere better to the speed limit than men. Of the women, 63 percent adhere to the speed limit, while for men it’s 54 percent. Proof upon proof upon proof.

5. Women use their phones less while driving

Last but not least: men use their phones while driving more often than women. Of the women, 2.4 percent dares to drive with a phone in hand, while for men this is 3.6 percent. I must say that I’m not proud of that 2.4 percent; this should of course just be 0.
