A million or true love – what do you choose?

A million or true love

Almost half of the Dutch prefer a weak wash over weak knees, it turns out. Because no less than 46% prefers money.

Research agency Time2play Media asked over a thousand Dutch people this and other money questions in June and investigated what we would do (and not do) if we won a large cash prize. 50% of the respondents are male, 48% female, and 2% other.

What do you do with a million?
Suppose you win a million euros. Do you call your boss first to say you won't be coming in anymore starting tomorrow? Do you give your best friend a brand new car as a gift? Or do you buy that second house in a tropical location? We all love to fantasize about it during that boring meeting or in traffic.

If we could choose between winning a million euros, finding true love, achieving a dream job, having a special talent, or leading a life full of adventure and travel, 46% would choose the million.

A significantly smaller percentage, 23% would opt for an adventurous life and 20% prefers finding true love. Not to mention that dream job or special talent: respectively 10% and 1% of the respondents would choose those.

Invest or vacation?
When asked what they would do first with 1 million, almost a third of respondents choose to invest the money for the long term. Furthermore, 23% would buy or renovate a house first and 19% would immediately pay off debts or loans.

Almost one in ten Dutch people prefers short-term happiness and books a luxury vacation, while 7% would save the money to be comfortable in the future.

Giving away is not exactly at the top of our priority list: 7% would share their capital first with family and friends and only 1% would donate it immediately to a good cause.

Friends versus family
If you win, you have friends, sang Henny Vrienten and Herman Brood, see here as well. Yet the Dutch are certainly not eager to share their winnings with their buddies. Six out of ten Dutch people would not lend or give money to their friends if they won a million euros.

In that regard, family members have a significantly better chance of getting a piece of the pie: 60% of the Dutch would (partially) share the money with immediate family. Another 35% would consider it…

Do we think money makes us happy? The answer to that will soon be on your modmod.nl!
