Just a moment about André Hazes at Jinek

André Hazes on Jinek

‘Is he going to talk about his mother too?’ Our supernanny Stella leans curiously over the table as I mention that André Hazes is a guest at Jinek. ‘No way,’ I say as I pour us some tea. ‘It’s only going to be about Holland Zingt Hazes, of course, that’s such a pre-arranged interview.’ Nevertheless, I was curious.

And yes, there he was. Just among the other guests. Where big names with sensitive topics at a talk show sometimes demand not to sit with the whole crowd at the table and only want to join in on their own topic, he was just sitting there listening to the other subjects. And then it was André's turn. And he was quite open-hearted. Just a few highlights.

- At his lowest point, he had two bottles of strong liquor and eight grams of coke and actually didn’t want to live anymore. He also thought he needed alcohol to be able to live. To be fun.

- Sometimes he secretly used in the kitchen to then lie under a blanket and pretend he was just sick.

- He didn’t go to a rehab clinic but to a clinic to find peace. Quitting was a way to find peace.

- He found everything after this period (so without alcohol at a birthday, Christmas without alcohol) almost a social experiment. It only just struck him how annoying drunk people are, but he also realized that he is just as fun without alcohol.

- Despite the fact that they have no contact, he was kind and understanding about his sister. ‘We experienced such bizarre things as children. That has distorted us.’

- He was also kind about his mother. ‘She did her best in her own way.’

- Actually, he didn’t want to perform anymore, but suddenly that changed. And that was because of the movie Elvis. Then he wanted to again. He went to the cinema five times in a row. Every day again. He called his team and said: ‘Come on, we’re going again.’ Elvis helped him back in the saddle and André has left the building, but is now back.

- I roll out the red carpet for him and pour a ginger tea.
