Dating Disasters: ‘I didn't expect to literally fall for him’

In Dating Disasters delen anonieme lezers hun meest gênante, tenenkrommende en dramatische dates. Deze week: the clumsy fall.

I was really looking forward to this date. After countless disappointing experiences, I had become slightly skeptical about finding 'the one', but I wasn't easily discouraged. His name was Justin, I had met him two weeks earlier on Tinder and today I would finally see him. I was determined to make a great impression and had specially bought a new pair of beautiful, mega impractical shoes for this occasion. If Carrie Bradshaw can do it, then so can I, I thought.

I walked into the restaurant where we had agreed to meet, full of confidence and a bit nervous. Justin greeted me with a broad smile and I immediately felt at ease. We quickly got caught up in a nice conversation and the evening seemed to be going promisingly. We laughed at each other's jokes, couldn't stop talking, and I was amazed at how quickly we dared to share personal things with each other. It was almost too good to be true...

Unfortunately, the confirmation of that fear also came on my way back from the toilet. Although my new shoes looked beautiful, they were impossible to walk in and not normally slippery. Combine that with a smooth floor and you can already guess what happened: I finally slipped and hit my head on the corner of a table leg.

What happened next I don't remember very well, but I do know that I was out for a moment. When I came to, Justin was standing next to me and I felt the stares of the other people in the restaurant burning into me. I was mortified, even more so when I heard they had called an ambulance for me. There I was, on my back with my new shoes in the air, but not in the right way. Luckily, Justin managed to lighten the situation a bit by indicating that he hadn't expected me to fall so hard for him. His cool demeanor helped me not to completely panic.

To make matters worse, I also had to go to the hospital because I had been out for a moment and there was a cut on my head. I indicated that Justin could go and I would call my parents, but he didn't leave my side for a moment.

Fortunately, I was allowed to go home soon and even then he turned out to be an angel on earth. I expected his involvement to wane as the week progressed, but that turned out not to be the case. He kept checking how I was doing and when I felt good enough to meet up, he was waiting on the doorstep with a bouquet of flowers and a bottle of bubbles to take me on a date. His idea? To buy flat shoes together so that this wouldn't happen again. His sweet patience and infectious humor have opened the door to my heart wide, and I can proudly say that we are still together three years later. The moral of the story? Always buy new shoes before going on a date, you never know what it will bring you.
