When they were still hugely popular (and still together as a group), I wasn't exactly in their target audience. I remember them performing in Amsterdam and staying at the Conservatorium Hotel — where I lived just two minutes away. What. A. Crazy place. Screaming and crying young girls outside that hotel, I didn't understand it at all. No, the One Direction hype completely passed me by.

But now I've suddenly come around, and it's all thanks to the documentary that's on Netflix: This Is Us. They are followed during their first tour and it's really so fun and interesting (and crazy too) to watch. Haven't seen it yet? Highly recommended. And so it's high time to go over the facts about 1D that every fan should know by now.

1. They almost had a different name

Liam shared this in an interview with Jimmy Fallon: his father suggested the name USP, which stands for Unique Selling Point.

2. Four of the five members have matching tattoos

Only Niall Horan didn't participate (he has no tattoos), the other four have a cross tattooed on their ankles.

3. Speaking of tattoos: together they have more than 4,000

Actually, I'm even more curious about how many hours they've spent in tattoo shops in total…

4. Niall's old email address is hilarious

He told James Corden that he signed up for X-Factor with the email address a_pimp_is_ere@hotmail.com. Love it.

5. Ed Sheeran has written several songs for One Direction

Such as Little Things, Over Again, 18, and Moments. Fun fact: he specifically wrote 18 for One Direction, the other songs were actually meant for his own album.

6. They were forced to leave a hotel owned by Donald Trump

Liam told this to Sean Evans, the host of Hot Ones. They were staying at a Trump hotel in New York when their manager was woken up in the middle of the night by Donald Trump himself, asking if the band could meet his daughter right now. The manager refused (because everyone was sleeping), after which Trump denied them access to the private garage and it became an unsafe situation due to the number of fans outside. Therefore, they had to move to another hotel.

7. The inspiration for Midnight Memories is not exactly romantic

They initially got it from… Kentucky Fried Chicken. According to Liam, the chorus actually went: ‘I love K-F-C’.

8. Harry Styles has four nipples

He has two extra ones on his stomach.

9. Niall is extremely afraid of pigeons

He was once attacked by a pigeon while sitting on the toilet and it has never really been the same since. Understandable.

10. Harry Styles is afraid of goats for the same reason

He was attacked by a goat at the age of ten and has been afraid of these goats ever since. Again: understandable.
