How to prevent family disputes during the Christmas dinner

Christmas dinner

Christmas is known as a time of togetherness, love, and joy. Unfortunately, it can also be a period when tensions run high, especially during the Christmas dinner. Family disputes can spoil the atmosphere and overshadow good memories. But fear not, for we are here to help you avoid all (sometimes inevitable) Christmas quarrels and maintain peace at the dinner table.

1. Communicate in advance
Set clear expectations before the dinner begins. If there are sensitive topics such as politics (we're all a bit done with that, right?) or family disputes, consider discussing in advance that you won't be talking about those to avoid awkward situations at the table.

2. Create a relaxed atmosphere
Ensure a cozy environment by adjusting the decorations and lighting. A warm atmosphere can help reduce tensions, and who can really be angry when surrounded by lovely Christmas lights and the happiest music in the world? If things start to go wrong, just turn that volume knob all the way up.

3. Focus on shared interests
Steer the conversation towards neutral and shared interests, rather than things you clearly disagree on. For example, talk about vacation plans, hobbies, or mutual friends to maintain a positive atmosphere. It's a sport, but it is really possible to avoid unpleasant topics.

4. Avoid certain topics
Certain topics can quickly lead to conflicts. Avoid controversial subjects like religion or personal life choices, especially if you know these can lead to discussions. A firm ‘let's not talk about that’ can already help make it clear that you're not in the mood for Aunt Saskia asking when you're going to start having kids since you're already 30, and that she hasn't seen you with a boyfriend for a long time. Thank you, next, Saskia.

5. Be mindful of alcohol consumption
Excessive alcohol consumption can throw inhibitions overboard and lead to unintended confrontations. It's a shame, but some people just get very unpleasantly drunk. Is the dinner at your place? Keep the bottles under control and ensure that not too much is drunk. Being a little tipsy has never made anyone a worse person, but if the atmosphere turns because someone has had too much prosecco, that's just a real shame.
