Animated films remain hot and The Super Mario Bros. Movie proved that again last weekend: it broke the record for highest revenue of an animated weekend in its opening weekend. I wasn't really planning to watch it, but now I'm having second thoughts; it looks really cool. And this success tastes like more for one of its creators, Chris Meladandri. He spoke with Variety and shared the plans for upcoming films, and there was excellent news: Shrek 5 seems to be happening. YES.

The bad news is that no contracts have been signed yet, but the good news is that it seems to be just a matter of time: ‘We expect the entire cast to return. We are starting those conversations now, but every indication we get is that all the actors are extremely excited to come back.’

The good news doesn't stop there, as there is a very good chance that we will also get a spin-off of Donkey. Eddie Murphy indicated last year that he is up for it (he finds Donkey funnier than Puss In Boots, who already got his own movie), and Meladandri is also enthusiastic: ‘No doubt about it,’ he replied when asked if Donkey could carry his own film.

It will still take a long time before we will even see a trailer for this fifth installment, but I personally find this a very nice prospect. And an excellent time to hold a Shrek marathon again. Those films remain so much fun.
