Just about Mia and Dion's first performance

By

This coming Saturday they will be at AFAS Live, but I hope (and I also guess that is the case) that there will still be a rehearsal and a singing lesson or twenty crammed into the days beforehand. Our entry for this year's Eurovision Song Contest, Mia and Dion, performed together for the first time last weekend, and... Well, it wasn't great.

The necessary jokes have already been made about it: that we might as well have sent in the broccoli song again, or that Mia and Dion just happened to be in the audience at The Bodyguard and I think many karaoke lovers suddenly grabbed the microphone with much more confidence (‘oooh, I'm not that bad after all’). No, their debut as a duo was not really something to write home about.

Mia and Dion have now also come up with a statement: according to them, it was mainly due to the technology in Madrid, where the pre-party of the Eurovision Song Contest took place. Now, I am not a professional singer (I had to give up that dream around my tenth birthday due to lack of talent), but there is a limit to how much you can blame the technology, right? Admittedly: not all acts were equally good (but a false note here and there is not unusual at the Eurovision Song Contest), but there was no act as bad as that of Mia and Dion. Unfortunately.

Honestly, I can keep watching the video, just like a car accident. You don't want to see it, you want to turn your head away because it's very uncomfortable to watch, and yet you keep looking. Disaster tourism at its finest.

But well, it's especially very sad for Mia and Dion themselves, who both have little to no stage experience (and certainly not in front of this many people). But what I found just as striking as the singing quality: their non-existent chemistry. It genuinely seemed on stage as if the two merely tolerate each other, which I found quite uncomfortable to watch. Maybe they could actually do some bonding sessions before the Eurovision Song Contest? If even Waylon and Ilse could temporarily make us believe they liked each other, nothing is impossible.

So now the big question: do we still have trust?

How far do you think Mia and Dion will get?
