Jennifer Aniston speaks for the first time about the loss of Matthew Perry

Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry

It has been over a month since Is there anyone who isn’t madly in love with Matthew Perry or at least hasn’t been? The funniest of the six Friends, with the best jokes and the absolute best intonation. he was found lifeless in the pool of his home in California. Things were finally looking up for the actor; he had written an autobiography, was finally sober, and wanted to stay that way, full of beautiful plans and zest for life. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be: he passed away at the age of 54, the youngest of the entire Friends cast.

I found it bizarre how that cast came under fire after his death. The comments under their Instagram posts were flooded with the question of ‘when they would come out with a statement.’ As if they owed that to the fans, and not as if they themselves suddenly lost a very dear friend — that is what truly matters.

Those statements came, and yes, yours truly everyone shed a tear. I have never been a hero when it comes to people passing away, even if they are celebrities I didn't know but appreciated. And if you have read Perry's autobiography (Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing), then you know that he was incredibly in love with Jennifer Aniston at the beginning of Friends. It never became anything other than friendship, but it was a very beautiful and special one.

And now Jennifer Aniston talks about that for the first time, in a conversation with Variety. Together with Reese Witherspoon, she was interviewed, particularly about the new season of The Morning Show, but since it was her first interview since his death, of course, she was asked about him. Jennifer speaks openly about it, she even says that she had contact with him on the day of his death.

A piece from the interview:

‘Jennifer, you recently lost a member of the Friends family. How do you want the world to remember him?’
Jennifer: ‘As he said he wanted to be remembered. He was happy. He was healthy. He had quit smoking. He was getting back in shape. He was happy, that’s all I know. I was literally texting with him that morning, that funny Matty. He was not in pain. He was not struggling. He was happy.’
Reese: ‘It’s important that people know that.’
Jennifer: ‘That’s it. I want people to know that he was really healthy, and getting healthier. He was going through a process. He was working so hard for it. He really had a tough time in life. I miss him terribly. We all do. Oh man, how he made us laugh.’

‘So many people, from those who knew him to journalists, have written odes to him. It must have been amazing to see so much love for him.’
Jennifer: ‘It’s so beautiful. I hope he knows that he was so incredibly loved in a way he never thought it was.’
Reese: ‘You were all so close. It’s wonderful to see what has come out of those friendships, and how you always took care of each other, year after year, after year. It’s very beautiful and a great standard for our industry, how you respected each other. I feel very blessed to have played a small role in that show and I walked in there like Alice in Wonderland, looking at the most popular cast that put this whole thing together. I remember going home and thinking: oh, they are really in a different league. They are on another planet when it comes to comedy, I have never seen anything like it in my life, you worked so well with each other’s energy and it was truly extraordinary.’
Jennifer: ‘I must also say that Matthew Perry’s dialect, his way of speaking, created a whole different world. We followed him, in a certain way. It really added something to our happiness.’
