It may sound really stupid — because you don't know the person at all — but yesterday I was really in a gloomy mood. Saturday to Sunday I was awake all night again (long live insomnia) and when I picked up my phone to scroll aimlessly, I saw a message: ‘Matthew Perry has passed away.’ It was from a friend of mine, who immediately thought to message me as a well-known big Friends fan with this news; so urgent that there was no form of context or grammar involved. Short and to the point, just like my reaction: ‘What the fuck?’

I immediately started googling, although you already know that when it's on TMZ, there's no such thing as fake news. Well, it's a gossip site, but when it comes to celebrity deaths in Hollywood, they've never been wrong.

Matthew Perry passed away, in his home, in his jacuzzi. No drugs were found at the location, which the police wanted to emphasize explicitly. He had finally been off those drugs since early 2021. Hopefully for good now, after being admitted to rehab fifteen times.

Finally no more drugs, but also no alcohol, although we still have to wait for the toxicology report to say that for sure. Given the circumstances (he had just returned from two hours of padel, his assistant went grocery shopping for him and was only gone for two hours), it seems that it was a tragic accident. A jacuzzi can be dangerous because of the heat of the water (for example, your blood vessels dilate, causing your blood pressure to drop — for people with heart diseases, going into a jacuzzi is therefore not wise), and it seems that his body had given up after all the drugs and alcohol.

And yes, it may seem stupid (especially given all the misery in the world) that you can feel so sad about an actor who has passed away, but I think that Friends has meant so much to many people like me. I still remember when the last episode aired: no Netflix, no streaming, but waiting for it to come on TV, and being inconsolable that these six people would not come back. Friends were also a bit like your friends, and that was suddenly over.

With Chandler Bing, of course, as the comedic talent. Oooh, how I used to have a huge crush on him.
