Selena Gomez has the most brilliant response to body hammers

I think one of the brightest people in Hollywood is Selena Gomez: apart from the fact that she can sing and act (the series Only Murders In The Building, in which she stars with Martin Short and Steve Martin, is highly recommended), she also dares to be vulnerable and is honest about her mental struggles. For instance, she recently released her documentary My Mind & Me, in which we get a behind-the-scenes look into her life, how she deals with her disease Lupus and her bipolar disorder. You just have to dare in Hollywood.

Another reason I like her so much is that she seems to be living her best life lately. Lots of holidays, lots of hanging out with family and friends and all sorts of dinners and get-togethers. She swore off Instagram for a while, but is now back on the app in full force. Admittedly, I find her intense friendship with Nicola Peltz-Beckham and Brooklyn Beckham-Peltz a tad intense, but well, Selena looks happy and that's what matters.

Of course, she also remains an A-Lister and so she could be found on the Golden Globes red carpet. There, she wore a tight black dress with puffy sleeves and a high slit. Not that people were talking about the dress by the way, it was just about the fact that she had gained weight. On the internet I saw so many ugly comments going by; she would be on drugs (because her eyes would look weird), she would have had plastic surgery on her face which was ‘obviously botched’, she was fat and so on.

These comments also reached Selena herself, who responded to them in an Instagram Live (which she did with her younger sister Gracie). ‘I'm a bit bigger at the moment because I've been enjoying myself tremendously over the holidays,’ she begins. ‘Right?’ she then asks her sister - and then says: ‘But we really don't care,’ after which they burst into laughter.

Love Selena for this, and hopefully in 2023 the internet will become less toxic when it comes to the weight of others. Idle hope, but still.
