The tastiest chips to get at the toko

Chip flavors from the toko

Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the gourmands at online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat it and what to cook. This time our cheffies serve you: the tastiest chips to get at the toko.

Grocery shopping at the toko: love it! I can get lost for hours among the shelves with the most diverse products. Take the chip shelf, for example. There are so many (crazy) flavors! These are four of my favorites – and unfortunately, I also came across a rare disgusting specimen. So consider yourself warned.

Calbee Potato Chips Swiss Wings Flavor
A bit of a crazy name perhaps, because when you think of Swiss cuisine, you probably think of raclette, but for many Hongkongers, this name makes perfect sense; this version of chicken wings has nothing to do with Switzerland, but is extremely popular here. Swiss Wings are similar to chicken wings with soy sauce, but with a sweeter sauce. And as a chip flavor, this is really incredibly tasty. Four hours of Cup-a-Soup as a pick-me-up? This is the better option for your afternoon slump. It's also nice that it's ridged chips because let's be honest: this is so much tastier than smooth chips. A bit sweet, nicely salty: mmm! A bit on the pricey side, but well, it's not an everyday chip. 70 grams, €2.55, available at Amazing Oriental.

Calbee Potato Chip Satay Beef Noodles Flavor
From the same brand from Hong Kong, I brought this limited edition chip flavor. I had high expectations, but unfortunately. Stale noodles. No, this is really not tasty. A little later I tasted them again and found them even worse than the first time; you better leave this bag alone. 70 grams, €2.55, available at Amazing Oriental.

Teriyaki Potato Chips
Oohhhh, this is delicious! I actually expected that, because I love the Japanese teriyaki sauce (this recipe with pineapple and chicken teriyaki, heavenly!). You can really taste the lightly smoky, sweet flavor in these chips. The chips themselves are also a bit thicker than normal, a winner! 100 grams, €1.99, available at Tjin’s.

Wasabi Nori Potato Chips
Koikeya is my brand, this is really a recommendation again. Spicy from the wasabi, but also soft from the nori (seaweed). Perfection in a bag and delicious with a Japanese beer. 100 grams, €1.99, available at Tjin’s.

Kara Mucho Hot Chili Potato Snack Ridged
For some people, it can't be hot enough. I get that with a spicy Thai soup, but chips that make you want to put your tongue in a bucket of cold water after one chip? After tasting the hottest chips from the supermarket I was done with those nasty burn-your-mouth chips for a while, but when someone recommended this Kara Mucho to me, I gave in. And to be honest: these thick-cut ridged chips are surprisingly crunchy, and although generously coated with, among other things, red chili pepper, it's really manageable. Sweet-spicy, delicious. Again on the pricey side; for a small bag of 60 grams, you pay €2.30. Available at Tjin’s.
