Netflix changes rules regarding password sharing again

Bridgerton season

Netflix, make up your mind. This is only causing confusion. First, it came out that the streaming service was really going to tackle the password-sharing situation, and the question everyone had was of course: how? Checking that is quite difficult. In Latin America, they were already working on addressing this ‘problem’ (for Netflix it's a problem, for us much less), and that meant that only one family could use the account.

And that immediately caused problems: what if your family lives spread out across the country? In my case, I share it with three friends and we don't exactly live together. To ‘solve’ that, Netflix decided that you can be logged in at multiple places, as long as you connect your devices to the wifi network of the main account at least once a month. Meine gute, what a hassle. Do I have to haul my TV to the house of the friend who is the main user?

That also didn't sit well with the users, simply because it's not feasible. The penalty was quite severe: if you missed a month, those devices were immediately thrown out of the account and possibly temporarily blocked. Netflix, chill out. This is not going to work.

They understand that themselves by now and that's why they have adjusted their measures again. In Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain, they will introduce it soon, so luckily we are still escaping the dance for a bit. They also indicate that there will be a possibility to share your subscription with people outside your household, but that will cost extra. Currently, in America, for example, it's $5.95 per profile. Tough prices, Netflix.

That creates confusion for me again, because we are already paying extra to have four profiles on one account. Do we then have to pay extra again? That doesn't seem to be the intention either. To be continued…
