Here's how you can live as long as people in the Blue Zones

I wrote about it before: people in the Blue Zones have it good. For those who need a little update: Blue Zones are special regions in the world where people live significantly longer and are much healthier than people living elsewhere. You can find them in places like Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Nicoya (Costa Rica), Icaria (Greece), and Loma Linda (USA). What connects these areas is not only the years on the calendar that residents gain, but also the way they live. Do you want to live like someone from one of the Blue Zones? Then I have good news for you. You don’t have to move your entire life to reap the benefits of this lifestyle. Simply incorporate the following habits into your life and you’re already well on your way.

Plant-based diet
In the Blue Zones, people primarily eat plant-based. Try to include more vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains in your diet. Occasionally replace meat with plant-based protein sources like tofu or beans. Start with small steps like one meatless day a week and discover recipes. I’m definitely not going to try that as a complete disaster in the kitchen, but I’d love to come by and taste what you’ve made.

Low impact movement
Look, we can work with this. Instead of doing extremely intensive workouts, Blue Zone residents prefer to engage in light physical activity daily. Biking, walking, and gardening are often part of their daily routine. Try to walk more often, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or consider an activity like yoga. It’s not about intensity, but about consistency.

Social connections
Social connectedness is crucial for a long and happy life. People in the Blue Zones always have strong family and social ties. Therefore, try to visit your friends or family more often. For example, organize a weekly meal together or plan a walk with friends. People in the Blue Zones also rarely eat alone, so try to share your meals with others more often.

Stress reduction
Yes, in our fast-paced society this sounds almost impossible, but effective stress management is a common characteristic in the Blue Zones. Look for ways to reduce stress such as meditation, mindfulness, or hobbies you enjoy. Create small moments of rest throughout the day, even if it’s just five minutes to take a deep breath and organize your thoughts.

Moderate alcohol consumption
Yes, don’t shoot the messenger. Because while in some Blue Zones alcohol is consumed regularly, it is always in moderation. They often enjoy one glass of wine with friends at the end of the day to unwind and enjoy each other’s company. Don’t drink alcohol at all? Then try a special mocktail to treat yourself a little extra.
