Hit on TikTok: drinking lettuce water to fall asleep quickly

By

As a walking zombie, having been an insomniac for years, I grab every sleep tip I come across with both hands. The latest hit on TikTok, which many users swear by, makes me a bit uneasy... Lettuce water? Seriously?

Well... Yes, this apparently really works and goes as follows: you put some lettuce leaves (or just a head of lettuce) in a pot of water, bring it to a boil, and then drink the water. Just be careful of any surprise guests like insects, which can sometimes be smuggled in with a head of lettuce.

You have to drink that water, and then you should feel incredibly sleepy after twenty minutes. Perfect if you have trouble falling asleep or if you want to prepare for an insane power nap. Honestly, it sounds super weird, but there is actually science behind it that proves why this works.

Lettuce contains lactucarium, a substance that makes you very sleepy. Dr. Winter tells Health.com: ‘It has a similar effect to opium and has a number of calming properties.’ This is further confirmed by a study from 2019, although there are also some doctors who claim that there is still too little evidence to really establish a relationship between lettuce and sleepiness.

So there's only one thing left to do: test it out yourself.
