Oh wow, could Madeleine McCann still be alive?
Was there a moment of the day when we thought about something else or talked about something else right after May 3, 2007? I don't think so. We were all in disbelief about the disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann. Her parents had put her and her siblings to bed in their hotel room, while they went a little further to have a bite to eat with friends. Every so often, they would check to see if everything was alright and if their children were still sleeping like roses. They didn't do that. At least, Madeleine was gone.
The search lasted for years, we saw her parents becoming more desperate with each video call. Madeleine could not be found and after all those years it seemed as if we had to file this event in the folder ‘unsolved mysteries’. What had happened we would probably never know. Whether she was still alive, even less.
But now there is a sign of life. An account has been created on Instagram of a girl who claims to be Madeleine McCann. @iammadeleinemccann already has 885,000 followers. Where a normal account of a young woman at that age would be filled with selfies with friends and cheerful holiday scenes, we see all kinds of ‘evidence’ suggesting that she is the real Madeleine. A mole in exactly the same place, a spot in the eye; according to Polish Julia Wendell, it is clear that she is the missing girl.
Her biography does not talk about her hobbies, but is a call to get in touch with Gary and Kate McCann.
The girl began to doubt her situation when her parents could not show her baby photos. A birth certificate was also untraceable. Her parents said she was 21, probably to distract her, because if she had the same calendar age as Madeleine (19), she might have connected the dots earlier.
Now there is an update (which she has also added to her bio) that Gary and Kate McCann are open to a DNA test. I just hope that this Julia/Madeleine is in a safe place and can conduct this investigation safely. What would it be if this nightmare ultimately gets a - kind of - happy ending.
