May was completely captivated by Whitney Houston again
All the OMG moments from I Wanna Dance With Somebody

Give me three glasses of wine and I have to listen to Whitney. And sing along. And whoever is next to me, I let her perform during the Nelson Mandela 70th birthday concert at Wembley Stadium. You know, where her glitter jacket got torn and she sang the longest note ever during The Greatest Love of All. Anyway, here speaks a fan. But even I was blown away by the facts from I Wanna Dance With Somebody (available on Netflix).
1. Whitney's parents had a bad relationship. She fled as a teenager to her brothers' bedroom where she would take a hit of hash to calm down. Drugs were an early part of her life.
2. She wasn't the girly girl she presented herself as during her performances. That was something her father insisted on, who posed as her manager.
3. Speaking of her father: she thought she could trust him, but he squandered her money, gave mistresses credit cards with unlimited limits, even houses, and, I could hardly believe this, private jets to multiple people. In the end, he sued Whitney for a hundred million dollars.
4. When Bobby Brown proposed to her (in the backseat of a car, super romantic), he immediately mentioned that his ex was pregnant with his child.
5. Her record label boss Clive Davis (played by Stanley Tucci) was a nice man. He even had it written into her contract that he would give her a bottle of Dom Perignon for every number 1 hit. Clive Davis was also the genius behind Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Janis Joplin, Aerosmith, and so on. He tried to protect her from her dark side. When Whitney lit a cigarette, he said: ‘Seeing someone with your voice smoke feels like leaving a Stradivarius out in the rain.’
6. Whitney had a lesbian relationship with her childhood friend Robin, whom she always hired afterward because she felt safe with her. Robin and Bobby were not a match, and Bobby sent Robin away. Very sad.
7. Whitney achieved the most consecutive number 1 hits, sold 220 million records, and is according to Wikipedia the singer with the most awards ever.
8. Whitney was not at her father's funeral.
9. She often walked to the lobby of her hotel to meet her dealer and pretended it was a fan who wanted to take a picture with her.
10. One of her last performances at the Grammys was one of her last and best performances as well. I wished it for her, after all the hardship she had gone through.
11. Bobbi Kristina died three years after Whitney, under similar circumstances.
12. Bobby Brown not only lost his daughter Bobbi, but also his son Bobby Brown (yes, again named after him) died in 2020. Bobby himself was so addicted in the 90s that he cooked cocaine and used heroin. When Whitney divorced him, she said: ‘The drugs were always there. But you didn't exactly make things better.‘
13. Whitney would be 60 years old now.
