About number one on the list of romantic destinations. For a honeymoon, for example, to immerse yourself in complete luxury. Mauritius is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. But yes: quite a long flight. And expensive. So we found a perfect alternative for you.

It can actually be closer to home and also much cheaper. Mauritius is an island in the Indian Ocean, located about 2,000 kilometers east of the African mainland. It is an island nation and is part of the African region. We found a gem in Europe that resembles Mauritius: the island of Malta. It is located near Sicily, Italy. Malta is a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful coastline, historical sights, including the ancient capital Valletta (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and the unique Blue Grotto. Enjoy the delicious Maltese cuisine, including fresh fish, pastizzi (savory pastries), ftira (local bread rolls), and fenkata (rabbit stew), and taste local wines and liqueurs such as Maltese għana. And while you're there, visit the medieval city of Mdina, also known as the ‘Silent City’. Explore the narrow streets, admire the beautiful architecture, and enjoy the panoramic view from the city walls.

Malta

Well, and there is a white beach. Lots of white beach. Clear water, sun on your face; what more could a person want? The coastline is dotted with beautiful bays, crystal blue water, and cool rocks: also a great island for kids to go on vacation. And take a nice boat for a day trip to Gozo: an island next to Malta, but definitely worth seeing. When should you book? The best travel time for Malta is from May to October. Then it is sunny, not raining, and there is little wind. The average flight from the Netherlands to Valletta (capital of Malta) takes three hours and five minutes. So you'll be there in no time.

And, mind you: it is still relatively cheap compared to traveling to other countries in the Mediterranean. It is less discovered by tourists than Spain, Portugal, or Italy, so take that chance now, before everyone knows about it again and you are crammed in with six hundred other Dutch people.
