Expedition aftertalk: please give Camp North some food

Episode 8

By
experienced Expedition Robinson

Anyone who knows me a little knows that there is one subject I would never dream of: bananas. I really do not like bananas at all, and actually, I am not that fond of fruit in general. But maybe even I would crave them if I had to stay at Camp North. The food is simply gone. And has been for quite a while. Camp South keeps leaving with a platter full of food after winning the immunity challenge. Just like in this episode; it’s even a whole curry package. Camp South is really a positive team, and I expected that would yield a huge advantage in the long run. Kiran is so sweet and positive that you could even drop a bucket on his head and he still wouldn’t curse.

I really had to adjust my opinion about Billy

So I expected that I would get really annoyed with Billy, and that everyone who was on the island with him would eventually start shouting that he needs to stop with those jokes. But it turns out to be true: his humor helps people get through those endlessly long days. After winning the challenge, he proudly calls himself ‘man of the match’ and that is also justified because he had a huge part in directing the beam to put out the fire. But now that Camp South is going home with the food again, I really start to worry about the residents of Camp North. Some of them arrived on the island quite slim and there is almost nothing left of them.

Hamza is now being forced to grow up

On Revenge Island, Hamza is waiting all alone for a new housemate. He makes an extra pancake as a welcome meal, but no one shows up at all. He spends hours scrubbing the pan while he dreams about how much he wants to tell his mother that he cooked himself. Eventually, Ymre comes to him, and it’s of course wonderful for her that Hamza has some extra food for her. The next day is the merging challenge and they need some extra strength for that. At Camp North, things are going from bad to worse and Chef Ramon even drops the pan with the little food they have into the fire.

Finally, there is some time to talk to each other

When I look at Camp South, I would almost want to book a week of Robinson. It looks so idyllic, they are having such a good time and everyone is happy and relaxed. The way they have arranged it for themselves is how many tourists envision their trip: eating Thai curry on a tropical beach. The only difference is that tourists pay for it, and the celebrities participating in Expedition Robinson get paid for it. Camp South won the challenge in a record time that even the producers of the show did not anticipate. So now there is finally time for some rest and relaxation. The peace on the island also creates space to think about things that are normally pushed aside. And so an impressive conversation arises between Farja and Ouassima, about how Farja's parents had to flee Iran to build a new life in a safe country, so their children could grow up healthy. Maybe it’s the environment, where nothing can distract you from the thoughts that these deep conversations open up, without phones and social media. Farja's story has certainly made a big impression on me, and just like with Billy, I now see him very differently.
