Netflix Tip of the Day: Society of the Snow

By
Society of Snow

If series and movies can't be grim enough for you, then this is the tip of the day, week, and maybe even month for you. The internet is feasting on this film, which is also based on a true story. Just a warning: it also contains cannibalism. Yep, I said it: it doesn't get much grimmer than this.

Society of the Snow is based on the plane crash in 1972, where a plane crashed in the Andes mountains. On board this Flight 571 was, among others, a rugby team from Uruguay, flying from Montevideo to Santiago for a match. But just before the final destination, everything went horribly wrong: the plane crashed in the mountains, resulting in the deaths of twelve people.

But 29 people survived, although the outside world knew nothing. Multiple search efforts were organized, but due to lack of success, they were canceled after a while and it was assumed that all passengers had perished. What a hell: without food in the mountains where it can easily drop to 40 degrees below zero and without any chance of rescue…

72 days after the crash, 16 survivors were rescued. The question was, of course: how on earth did they survive this? And you might have guessed it, but indeed: by eating each other. Society of the Snow shows this entire event, from the departure of the plane to the rescue and everything in between. I think it's unnecessary to say that this is not really a suitable film for people with a weak stomach.

Society of the Snow has been online since January 4, and people are heavily impressed, also because the creators have stayed very close to the truth. The film has used the book La Sociedad de la Nieve, written by Pablo Vierci, as a guideline.

Oh yes, and perhaps an unnecessary warning, but if you have a fear of flyingthen this might not be the absolute best option to watch. Although, I also have that issue and found this to be a really great, bizarre, and impressive film. I would still give it a chance if you're in doubt.
