Supermarkets will now also sell STI tests

Look, I think this is a good development: starting today, you will no longer go to Albert Heijn alone for your daily groceries, but you can also immediately check if you are not infected with gonorrhea and/or chlamydia. Huh? Yes, really. Albert Heijn is starting today with the sale of these STI tests, so you can easily test yourself at home for these sexually transmitted infections.
‘With this self-collection test, urine can be collected anonymously and easily from home. Then send the test material for free to the certified laboratory for analysis. You will then receive the test result quickly and confidentially via a secure online portal,’ says Albert Heijn. Hatsaaa, that’s nice. Because honestly: those waiting times at the GGD are not always pleasant, and then to actually make the effort to go there...
No, then we prefer to be lazy than tired and just do it comfortably at home. I can also imagine that such a visit to the GGD becomes even more stressful because you are afraid of running into someone you know or actually encountering someone. The horror. While it is of course good for both that you get tested regularly, still small talk at the STI clinic is not something many people excel at.
Soa Aids Nederland is also very happy with this development, although they would prefer even more steps in the right direction: ‘It is nice that offering tests is becoming more accessible, but then the whole package must also be offered. This means that you receive advice in advance on which test to use and how to do it, and that the provider also informs you after the result about what to do.’
Who knows, the assortment may be expanded in the future, but for now this is already a very good step, especially since you can simply pay for it at the self-scan. The tests cost 49 euros and are available for both men and women in the Albert Heijn stores.
