It's been a long time since I've been so absorbed in a series like The Summer I Turned Pretty. The creators behind Amazon Prime smartly play on the binge-watching cravings of people like me – and there are many of us – by releasing a new episode every Wednesday. The result? We lie in wait for six days, panting and drooling for our next fix of Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah. And in the meantime, we ask each other if we are Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah.

The Summer I Turned Pretty for beginners

The series, based on the books by Jenny Han, revolves around the love triangle between the main character Belly (played by Lola Tung) and the brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno).
Belly spent every summer as a little girl in the summer house (which from now on is also your dream house, trust me) in Cousins. The house belongs to Susannah, Belly's mother's best friend, Laurel. Susannah has two sons: Jeremiah and Conrad. And Belly has a big soft spot for both of them – and they for her. After a relationship with Conrad, she eventually ends up with Jeremiah, whom she suddenly wants to marry – and that in a hurry.

Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah?

That's the question now that the series is approaching its finale. Jeremiah has proposed to Belly, and the pedal to the altar is pressed to the floor. As a viewer, one wonders where that sudden urgency comes from: they are young, they have their whole lives ahead of them. Yet both Belly and Jeremiah feel that once they are married, the door to Conrad is forever closed.
But then – SPOILER ALERT – everything suddenly becomes uncertain. During Jeremiah's bachelor party, someone tells Conrad that his brother has been unfaithful to Belly during a trip with his study group to Mexico. For Conrad, it's the moment to ask Belly if she is sure where her heart lies, and to tell her that he will always love her. The dream castle begins to wobble.
And yesterday – another spoiler – Jeremiah decides at the last moment not to marry Belly because he feels that she has never looked at him the way she looks at Conrad. Fans are angry: at Jeremiah, at Belly, actually at everyone. Because yes, she leaves both brothers hanging. And sometimes she says things in an attempt to push Conrad away that are directly hurtful.

Instagram is angry

Or rather: the fans on Instagram are angry. The accounts of Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, and Gavin Casalegno are flooded with hateful comments and even death threats.
Lola Tung herself responded with a plea to fans to stop the threats: “I promise you, it's not worth it.” Voor Amazon Prime the line has been crossed. On all the official social media channels for the series, a video message was shared with the text: “The summer we started behaving normally online.” A clear reference to the title of the series – and a serious reminder to the fans.
