Het is zo lang geleden dat ik zo geobsedeerd was door een serie als The Summer I Turned Pretty. De makers van Amazon Prime they know how to play very well with the binge-watching hunger of people like me – and there are many of us – by releasing a new episode every Wednesday. The result? We wait for six days, impatient and trembling, for our next fix of Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah. And in the meantime, we wonder if we are Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah.

The Summer I Turned Pretty voor beginners

De serie, gebaseerd op de boeken van Jenny Han, draait om de liefdesdriehoek tussen de hoofdpersoon Belly (gespeeld door Lola Tung) en de broers Conrad (Christopher Briney) en Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno).
As a child, Belly spent every summer at the beach house (which will now also be your dream house, trust me) in Cousins. The house belongs to Susannah, Belly's mother Laurel's best friend. Susannah has two sons: Jeremiah and Conrad. And Belly has a crush on both – and they on her. After a relationship with Conrad, she ends up with Jeremiah, with whom she suddenly wants to marry quickly.

Team Conrad of team Jeremiah?

This is the question now that the series is approaching its finale. Jeremiah has asked Belly to marry him, and they are racing full speed towards the altar. As a viewer, you wonder where all this urgency comes from: they are young, they have their whole lives ahead of them. Yet both Belly and Jeremiah feel that once married, the door to Conrad will close forever.
But then – LET OP SPOILER – everything starts to wobble. During Jeremiah's bachelor party, someone tells Conrad that his brother cheated on Belly during a trip to Mexico with his college club. For Conrad, it's the perfect moment to ask Belly if she is really sure where her heart lies, and to tell her that he will love her forever. The house of cards begins to tremble.
And yesterday – another spoiler – Jeremiah decided at the last moment not to marry Belly, because he realized that she has never looked at him the way she looks at Conrad. Fans are angry: with Jeremiah, with Belly, with everyone really. Because yes, he keeps them both hanging. And sometimes he says, in an attempt to push Conrad away, really painful things.

Instagram is boos

Lola Tung personally responded with a plea to fans to stop with the threats: “Ik beloof je, het is het niet waard.” Voor Amazon Prime was het de druppel die de emmer deed overlopen. Op alle officiële sociale media kanalen van de serie verscheen een videoboodschap met de tekst: “De zomer waarin we normaal begonnen te doen online.” A clear ironic reference to the title of the series – and a serious reminder for the fans.
