Het is lang geleden dat ik zo verslaafd was aan een serie als The Summer I Turned Pretty. De makers achter Amazon Prime plays smart on the binge cravings of people like me – and there are many of us – by releasing a new episode every Wednesday. The result? We are wagging our tails and drooling for six days while we wait for our next dose of Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah. And in the meantime, we ask each other if we are Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah.

The Summer I Turned Pretty voor beginners

De serie, gebaseerd op de boeken van Jenny Han, draait om de liefdesdriehoek tussen de hoofdpersoon Belly (gespeeld door Lola Tung) en de broers Conrad (Christopher Briney) en Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno).
Belly spent every summer as a little girl in the summer house (which from now on is also your dream house, trust me) in Cousins. The house belongs to Susannah, Belly’s mom's best friend Laurel. Susannah has two sons: Jeremiah and Conrad. And Belly has a big weakness for both – and they for her. After a relationship with Conrad, she eventually ends up with Jeremiah, whom she suddenly wants to marry very quickly.

Team Conrad of Team Jeremiah?

That is the question now as the series approaches its finale. Jeremiah has proposed to Belly and the gas pedal towards the altar is pressed to the floor. As viewers, we wonder where the urgency comes from: they are young, they have their whole lives ahead of them. Yet both Belly and Jeremiah feel that once they are married, the door to Conrad is forever closed.
But then – SPOILER ALERT – everything starts to shake. During Jeremiah's bachelor party, someone tells Conrad that his brother has cheated on Belly during a trip with his student group to Mexico. For Conrad, it is a perfect opportunity to ask Belly if she really knows where her heart lies, and to say that he will always love her. The castle in the air begins to sway.

And yesterday – another spoiler – Jeremiah decided at the last moment not to marry Belly, as he felt that she never looked at him the way she looks at Conrad. Fans are angry: at Jeremiah, at Belly, really at everyone. Because yes, she lets both brothers hang in uncertainty. And sometimes she says, in an attempt to push Conrad away, things that are purely painful.

Instagram is boos

Of beter gezegd: de fans op Instagram zijn boos. De accounts van Lola Tung, Christopher Briney en Gavin Casalegno overflows with hate comments and even death threats.
Lola Tung herself responded with a plea to fans to stop threatening: “Ik beloof je, het is het niet waard.” Want Amazon Prime was de grens bereikt. Op alle officiële sociale mediakanalen van de serie verscheen een videoboodschap met de tekst: “De zomer waarin we ons normaal gingen gedragen online.” A clear nod to the title of the series – and a serious reminder to fans.
