About Donatella

Donatella Versace, born on May 2, 1955, in Reggio Calabria, Italy, is the youngest sister of Gianni Versace, the great genius behind the fashion house Versace. Their older sister, Tina, died at the age of twelve from an untreated tetanus infection, and their other brother, Santo, is also involved in the company and holds 30% of the Versace shares.

Economist became designer

In the 1970s, Donatella studied economics and, as often happens in life, things went a bit differently here. Donatella moved to Milan to live with her brother and planned to handle the PR for his company. However, since Gianni saw her as his muse and as someone who dared to challenge him, he wanted her to do more. Thus, he gave her the leadership of the younger Versace label, Versus.

After the murder

Gianni Versace was brutally murdered in 1997 in front of his villa in Miami, and Donatella was the most logical person to continue his legacy. And she did. For almost thirty years. Just like her brother, Donatella also managed to gather famous friends who wore ‘her’. Eric Clapton, Jennifer Lopez, and Lady Gaga are all big Versace fans. Lady Gaga even wrote a song about her: Donatella.

Donatella privately

Donatella was married to a former model, Paul Beck, and has two children with him: Daniel and Allegra (one of my favorite names, but that's beside the point).

Donatella continued to create bold designs just like Gianni. We will never forget Liz Hurley's safety pin dress and Jennifer Lopez's deeply cut jungle print dress.

She passes her creative leadership to Dario Vitale, who previously worked for Bottega Veneta and Miu Miu. It is his task to pair the heritage with innovation. One thing is certain: Donatella will, as long as she can, sit in the front row and applaud for him.

“It’s been the greatest honour of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy. He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity. I will remain Versace’s most passionate supporter. Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart.”
