Erik Menendez remains in jail
the glamour, the Netflix series and the tragedy of a true crime icon

This morning the news broke: Erik Menendez, one of the infamous Menendez brothers, will not be released early. A California parole board determined that he still poses too great a risk to society. And immediately the buzz begins again: who were those boys again who murdered their parents in their Beverly Hills villa, but then casually went on Rolex shopping sprees? And why are they once again TikTok favorites, Netflix characters and even the subject of Kim Kardashian’s pleafor justice? Time to lay the glitter and darkness of the Menendez story side by side.

The murder that made Beverly Hills tremble
On August 20, 1989, Erik and Lyle Menendez shot their parents José and Kitty dead in their luxury villa. Not just any family: José was a powerful businessman, mother Kitty a society woman. The brothers were 18 and 21, and instead of fleeing, they did something else: they went shopping. New watches, expensive cars, fancy dinners. Beverly Hills was in shock, but the brothers seemed to be in an episode of 90210 rather than in a period of mourning. It was this combination of horror and glamour that forever etched their story in the memory of America.

The Netflix series that reignited everything
Fast forward to 2024: Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story premieres on Netflix. After the success of Dahmer, Ryan Murphy once again sank his teeth into true crime, this time focusing on the Menendez brothers. The effect? A whole new generation got to know them, and suddenly they became the subject of TikTok edits with melancholic music and commentary about their “tragic eyes” and “boyband looks”. Their story got a makeover in pop culture, where crime and mystique went hand in hand.

Erik Menendez: the quiet brother
Erik was born in 1970 in New Jersey. He was shy, more in the background than Lyle, and dreamed of a tennis career. He eventually studied briefly at the University of California, Irvine. But that shy boy would go down in history as one of the most discussed true crime figures. During therapy, he eventually confessed to the murder, a confession that leaked to the police via a psychologist and his ex. It was Erik who opened the door to their conviction.
Love behind bars
The bizarre thing: despite a life sentence, Erik grew into a kind of tragic hero. In 1999, he married Tammi in prison, who has remained by his side ever since. She sent him an email as early as 1993, but when her husband committed suicide in 1996, they let their love run free. They got married in a prison ceremony and have been “together” since then. The trials attracted lines of young women who fell in love with the 'brothers with the sad eyes'. It earned Erik a mountain of fan mail and a certain pop status – something that continues to this day.Kim Kardashian and the fight for justice.
That even Kim Kardashian took an interest in their case says enough. Kim studied law and in her campaign to reform the American prison system, she pointed out the Menendez brothers multiple times. According to her, they were victims of severe abuse at home, and their case deserves a fairer review. With Kim in your corner, everything gets bigger – and suddenly we were not only talking about a crime, but also about abuse of power, trauma, and second chances.
Today: parole denied.

Yet this morning was a hard blow for Erik. During his parole hearing, he spoke about regret, his religious growth, and his attempts to do something positive in prison. But the board mainly looked at his missteps in jail: a hidden phone, alcohol use, involvement in a gang. Enough reasons to say: 'not yet'. Erik remains behind bars for now, with a new chance only in three years.
The lasting fascination.
What makes the Menendez brothers so different from other true crime stories is that cocktail of glamour and tragedy. Two handsome boys in expensive suits, Beverly Hills as a backdrop, a Netflix series that made them icons again, and a Kardashian who makes their case her mission. The lines between crime, celebrity, and pop culture are thinner than ever with the Menendez brothers – and that explains why, more than 35 years later, we are still talking about them.
