Movies on TV: these titles you don't want to miss this week

By
A close-up of a smiling young woman with long, dark hair sitting on a couch in a warmly lit living room. She is wearing a red-white-blue sweater and looking sideways at a screen (not visible). In her left hand, she holds a white smartphone and in her right hand a remote control. On her lap is a large, transparent bowl of popcorn. In the background, bookshelves are visible.

With all that streaming these days, we almost forget how fun it was: sitting down just in time with a blanket, a well-filled snack bowl, and then boom, turning on the TV for your favorite movie. Delightful, right? Good news: you can still do that. Every day there are movies on TV that make channel surfing worthwhile again. We gathered the best ones so you can enjoy a classic TV night. Be on time, okay?.

Movies on TV Monday, October 27

Gladiator (Veronica, 20:25)

We kick off the week with a classic, because let's be honest, you can't really call anything else ‘Gladiator’. Alright, a brief summary: the dying emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) wants general Maximus (Russell Crowe) to succeed him after his death. But the emperor's son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) thinks otherwise. He murders his father and sentences Maximus to death. Maximus manages to escape at first but is later captured. What follows is a fight in the arena, where Maximus fights as a gladiator for his honor, and especially for his revenge. A film full of action, emotion, and iconic moments music (because with Hans Zimmer behind the soundtrack, it can't really go wrong).

Talk to Me (RTL 7, 20:25)

It's going to be a tough choice this Monday, although it won't be a dilemma for horror fans. Just before the peak of spooky season, the tension is ramped up significantly. And with the supernatural horror film ‘Talk to Me’, your heart rate will be at 120 in no time. In the film, a group of friends discovers how to summon spirits with a embalmed hand. Whoever grabs the hand and says “talk to me” can communicate with a deceased person. But to prevent the spirit from binding to someone, the hand must be released within 90 seconds and a candle must be blown out. What follows? An addiction to the tension; until one of them goes a bit too far... This suddenly makes that ordinary Monday night a bit more exciting.

Movies on TV Tuesday, October 28

Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (RTL 7, 22:10)

Believe me, I am absolutely no hero when it comes to horror movies. But even I found this one good; really “just one more time” good. I'm talking about ‘Escape Room: Tournament of Champions’. It's a sequel, but if you want to see part 1, you can find it on Apple TV. So maybe a few small spoilers ahead: Zoë (Taylor Russell) and Ben (Logan Miller) have survived the escape room and are determined to take revenge on the creators. But on their way to the headquarters, they discover that they are once again trapped in a series of impossible puzzles. The stakes are higher than ever, and the challenges? They're even more dangerous. Escaping once was possible, but twice? That just feels impossible.

Movies on TV Wednesday, October 29

Gooische Vrouwen 2 (RTL 8, 20:25)

Need a break from all that tension? We totally understand. Make sure you're ready on Wednesday at 20:25 for ‘Gooische Vrouwen 2’. Ideal as a little recap for the new season, and definitely never a punishment to watch. The film brings back that familiar chaos of the Gooische women. Claire returns totally unrecognizable from Burkina Faso. Cheryl is cheated on again and is really done with it now. Anouk's love life is all over the place again, and Roelien's marital happiness is short-lived when the girls' trip in Austria goes completely wrong. Better chill the Chardonnay, because this is going to be enjoyable again.

Smile (Paramount Network, 22:00)

Want to keep that spooky atmosphere going? Then ‘Smile’ is the perfect movie for your Wednesday night. Don't be fooled by the title; you won't be laughing much in this horror film. Psychotherapist Rose (Sosie Bacon) witnesses something horrific during a session: her client looks at her with a broad smile and then commits suicide. It turns out to be a curse that Rose can't shake off. And the question is whether she can ever escape it. Believe me, the next time someone smiles at you kindly, it suddenly feels pretty creepy. But well, that should wear off... hopefully.

Movies on TV Thursday, October 30

X-Men: First Class (Veronica, 20:30)

Marvel movies always remain a bit complicated. The order of the films is never the chronological order of the stories, so that can sometimes confuse you. Fortunately, you can also watch them separately; the only thing you miss are a few details. This Thursday, you can cross ‘X-Men: First Class’ off your list. Chronologically, this is the beginning of the X-Men series: a look into the past of the superheroes, and how Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) eventually became Professor X. What went wrong between him and his best friend Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender)? How did he become the professor's greatest enemy Magneto? Oh, and bonus: Jennifer Lawrence also makes an appearance; but you have to really pay attention to recognize her.

Movies on TV Friday, October 31

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (RTL 7, 20:25)

Happy Halloween! On this spooky day, a horror classic cannot be missed. And ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ has the honor of scaring us all again. After ‘Monster 3: The Ed Gein Story’, we know exactly where the inspiration for this film comes from; and how gruesome it is. When Sally (Marilyn Burns) hears that her father's grave has been vandalized, she doesn't hesitate for a moment. Together with a few friends, she goes in search of the culprit, but she soon regrets it. On the way, the group has car trouble and the only option is to knock on the door of a rather creepy house. What turns out? It's the house of the Sawyer family; a family full of psychopaths, murderers, and cannibals. And the worst of all? Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen). With his chainsaw and terrifying mask, he becomes their, and our, biggest nightmare.

The Voyeurs (Net 5, 23:00)

Want to recover from ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’? Then you can continue with ‘The Voyeurs’. A thriller, indeed, but nowhere near as intense as Leatherface — and with a slight erotic touch. Pippa (Sydney Sweeney) and Thomas (Justice Smith) have just found their dream apartment. But as soon as they settle in, they realize they can look directly into their neighbors' apartment. What starts as innocent peeping quickly turns when they discover that one of their neighbors is cheating. The temptation and their desires grow stronger, and their lives become increasingly intertwined; and that has major consequences. Maybe it's best to pull the curtains tight before you go to sleep.

Movies on TV Saturday, November 1

Taken (RTL 7, 20:00)

Time for some action; and who better than Liam Neeson? ‘Taken’ was a bit of his big breakthrough as an action hero. In the film, he plays former CIA agent Bryan Mills, who reluctantly lets his daughter and her friend go to Paris. But once there, the girls are kidnapped by an Albanian gang known for human trafficking. Mills has no choice but to search for his daughter himself, and fortunately, his experience with the CIA comes in handy. But time is running out: if he doesn't find the girls within 96 hours, they will be gone forever. This will be a night on the edge of your seat; and enjoy ‘our’ Famke Janssen.

Two Weeks Notice (SBS 9, 18:00)

What could be better than a romcom on a Saturday night? Just a little shamelessly swooning. With ‘Two Weeks Notice’, you're in for a treat this week, especially with the perfect combination of Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock. Bullock plays the activist environmental lawyer Lucy Kelson, who works for millionaire George Wade (Grant). But she slowly starts to get fed up; she is seen more as his personal caretaker than as a legal expert. The limit is reached, and Lucy quits. George has two weeks to find a worthy replacement. But when her position is filled, Lucy starts to have doubts. Was it a mistake? What does she actually feel for George? You can already feel where this is going, but that's exactly what makes it so delightful.

Movies on TV Sunday, November 2

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Net 5, 20:00)

Autumn isn't complete without a Harry Potter marathon, right? This Sunday, part 4, which I consider the best, is on the schedule: ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’. Hogwarts is organizing the Triwizard Tournament together with the Durmstrang Institute and the Beauxbatons Academy. And although Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) is actually too young, the Goblet of Fire decides that he must participate. It seems like an impossible mission that puts Harry in great danger. And if that wasn't enough, the threat of Voldemort returning looms. Get the hot chocolate ready, grab a blanket, it's time for a night of magic.

The Hunger Games Mockingjay part 1 (Net 5, 23:05)

Now that we're in the movie series, fans of The Hunger Games can also enjoy this weekend. Part 3 is up: ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1’. What seemed impossible, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) has managed to do: survive the Hunger Games twice. But the danger is not over yet. Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) has been captured by the Capitol and President Snow (Donald Sutherland) is out for revenge. Katniss becomes the face of the rebellion and takes up the fight. But in this war, no one is safe; and almost no one is truly trustworthy. “If we burn, you burn with us.” Just those words are iconic. This is going to be another delightful movie night. A late one, but with ‘The Hunger Games’, that's no punishment, right?
