The most fun, free gifts for Mother’s Day

Funniest gifts for Mother’s Day and they are free

Sunday is the day; Mother's Day. And I always act tough as if I don't care, but in the meantime, I just want the whole package. Breakfast in bed, a handmade tea box or a clay dish where I can put my jewelry, and if we're having such a nice time, my beloved can also come with a gift. Last year I got a delicious room spray from Diptyque and the year before that he – completely on his own, it must be said – ordered Tod's shoes for me.

At the editorial office, we talked about what the best gifts are for Mother's Day and I immediately burst out. That perfume 1969 that you can buy at Paul Warmer if you're there, I also find that Popeye bag too cute. But then I remembered again that the charm of Mother's Day is the attention. That's more important than money. Yes, really. So here come my dearest Mother's Day gifts.

Free gifts for Mother's Day: love in a jar

This costs nothing at all. Take a nice jar – ideally an empty Diptyque candle with a lid, at worst an empty Nutella jar, anything goes – and fill it with notes where you write a compliment about your mother on each note. This way she can pick one out occasionally and see what makes her family happy.

A playlist full of memories

We have so many songs that immediately take me back to vacations and moments. How nice to bundle all those events into a special playlist.

The coupon book: old-fashioned but oh so fun

On each page something you could do for your mother. I'll name a few: emptying the dishwasher. And loading the dishwasher. Walking the dog, massaging her back, tidying up the utility room, those kinds of things. Make your mother very, very happy with those. Especially with points 1 and 2.

Wellness at home, pampering your mother

Make the bathroom cozy for your mother, put down candles, dim the lights, roll towels up nicely, lay out her favorite lounge outfit, and place her favorite tea and book on the edge of the bathtub.

A small gesture, big effect: pump those bike tires up

You probably also borrow your mother's bike sometimes and then return it with a flat battery and soft tires. Pump them up nicely, fill the battery, and who knows, maybe even wipe the saddle and leave a sweet note in her basket. Really; you're going to score points.

For the tears: a beautiful closing

And do you want her to cry? Then you should write this sentence by Edgar Allan Poe on a card:

“Because I feel that, in the heavens above, the angels whispering to one another can find no sweeter word than ‘mother’” – Edgar Allan Poe
