New on Netflix in August

New on Netflix August

You might not say it with all this rain, but we are really in the middle of summer. Unfortunately, the forecasts for the coming days don't really suggest that the weather will behave accordingly. So a day at the beach or a picnic is also out of the question. But what do you do then? Of course, you binge-watch Netflix; and luckily, there are quite a few titles coming up to entertain us. I'll go through the best movies and series with you that will make waiting for the sun a lot easier.

My Oxford Year (August 1 on Netflix)

If the summer weather is still taking its time, we have to bring it into our homes ourselves. To help us with that, Netflix starts the month with the new romcom ‘My Oxford Year’, based on the book of the same name by Julia Whelan. American student Anna (Sofia Carson) heads to Oxford to fulfill her big dream: studying at the university there. She is driven and has a clear goal. But her oh-so-carefully laid plan completely falls apart when she meets the mysterious Jamie (Corey Mylchreest).

Wednesday season 2 (August 6 on Netflix)

Very appropriately on a Wednesday ‘Wednesday’ is finally back with season 2 after a long wait. Well, the first five episodes anyway; for the second part, we will have to be patient until September. With the promise that it will be even darker and freakier than season 1, we have a lot to look forward to. Wednesday returns to Nevermore Academy with the idea that she has everything under control, but that turns out to be quite the opposite. Especially when the line between her school and family life starts to blur; you might as well say disappear. It changes the whole dynamic, and that is not always positive for Wednesday. According to creator Miles Millar, nothing is what it seems this coming season, so that promises something.

Faithfully Yours (August 6 on Netflix)

We don't have to cross the border for movies this summer either. ‘Faithfully Yours’ is back on Netflix. And this Dutch thriller has no less than the best actresses at the helm. Elise Schaap and Bracha van Doesburgh play the roles of Isabel and Bodil, two friends who occasionally go away for a weekend. But during these trips, they don't go shopping innocently; they are each other's alibi for the affairs they need to keep hidden from their husbands. A carefully thought-out plan, but it goes wrong when Isabel goes missing. Bodil becomes more and more trapped in the web of lies they have created.

Love is Blind UK season 2 (August 13)

The United Kingdom is not necessarily known as a warm destination, but the temperature there will rise significantly this summer. Our (actually not so) guilty pleasure ‘Love is Blind’ is back. A new group of singles from the UK and Ireland steps into the pods in search of love. The trailer already promises us the necessary romance, but also plenty of drama; even before the couples have had a chance to see each other. Bring it on!

Night Always Comes (August 15 on Netflix)

It will be the month of book adaptations, as ‘Night Always Comes’ is also based on a bestseller of the same name; only this story is certainly not a sweet romcom. In this mysterious thriller, Lynette (Vanessa Kirby) manages to earn just enough money with several, sometimes illegal, jobs to buy her family's house so she can continue living there with her mother and disabled brother. But when the deal threatens to fall through at the last minute, Lynette must do everything she can to gather even more money. In a desperate attempt to protect her family, she comes face to face with greedy scammers and is pulled back into her dark past. How far can and will she go?

My Life with the Walter Boys

My Life with the Walter Boys season 2 (August 28 on Netflix)

Fan of ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’? Then you're going to love this series too. After the death of her parents, 15-year-old Jackie Howard (Nikki Rodriguez) traded New York for the countryside of Colorado. Here she lives with Katherine Walters, a friend of her mother's, her husband, and two sons Cole (Noah LaLonde) and Alex (Ashby Gentry). And those two boys turn her world upside down. Jackie can't control her feelings for the brothers, and at the end of season 1, she flees back to New York. The question now is: for how long? In season 2, she faces the complicated task of discovering where she truly belongs.

The Thursday Murder Club

The Thursday Murder Club (August 28 on Netflix)

A scenario that all my fellow true crime fans might be able to imagine. Elizabeth (Helen Mirren), Ron (Pierce Brosnan), Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley), and Joyce (Celia Imrie) live together in a retirement home. But instead of filling their time with card games, they meet every week to dive into a new cold case. An innocent hobby, until a murder is committed in their vicinity. These amateur detectives seize their chance and also throw themselves into this case. And they dare to put a lot on the line.
