New on Netflix in January

After all those holidays, you do fall a bit into a hole in January. All the cheerful Christmas lights disappear back to the attic and the days feel dark and cold again. Fortunately, Netflix brings some light at the end of the winter tunnel. I’ll take you through the most fun movies and series so you can start the year off right.
The Sand Castle (January 24)
Netflix continues its series of thrilling thrillers into the new year. In ‘The Sand Castle’, we follow an Arab family that gets stuck on an seemingly fairy-tale island. But that dreamy atmosphere quickly turns into a nightmare as the family discovers more and more dark secrets of the island. They must make difficult choices in the hope of being able to return home, while the line between reality and fiction seems to blur more and more. 2025 will certainly not start off boring.
The Night Agent season 2 (January 23)
We’ve had to practice our patience quite a bit, but after almost two years, ‘The Night Agent’ is back. For those who don’t immediately recognize the name, here’s a little recap. Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) is a low-ranking FBI agent with just one task: to answer an emergency phone that never actually rings. Until one night, suddenly, it does ring. Peter finds himself in a conspiracy that leads him to the White House, where he must save the president and himself. In season 2, Peter is officially appointed as Night Agent and steps (again) into a world full of secrets. But who can he trust?
Number 24 (January 1)
While we (probably) start our year with a massive hangover, they at Netflix know how to get to work right away. On January 1, the new Norwegian war film ‘Number 24’ will be released. And if there’s one thing we know about Scandinavian titles by now, it’s that they are very thrilling. In ‘Number 24’, we follow Gunnar Sønsteby (Sjur Vatne Brean). On the day the Germans invade Norway, he decides to resist. He becomes the leader of the “Oslo gang” and organizes various sabotage actions. At the risk of his own life, he becomes a true war hero. And an IMDb score of 8.2 promises only good things.
Knokke Off season 2 (January 31)
When you think of Knokke, you probably think of a quiet and luxurious vacation on the Belgian coast. But in the second season of ‘Knokke Off’, the atmosphere is a bit less relaxed. Louise (Pommelien Thijs) finds herself in a complicated love triangle with Daan (Eliyha Altena) and Alex (Willem De Schryver) and will have to make a choice. Meanwhile, the death of Alex’s father keeps the village busy and the children try to escape their parents’ secrets. For such a hefty dose of drama, we gladly book a one-way ticket.
Back in Action (January 17)
After almost 10 years, Cameron Diaz returns to Hollywood; and what title could be more fitting than ‘Back in Action’. She is not the only one back in action: Jamie Foxx is also fully back in the spotlight after recovering from a brain hemorrhage. In this action-comedy, the duo plays a couple with a big secret: they were once secret agents. Their characters Emily and Matt think they have left this spy life behind, but that changes when their old cover is revealed. Suddenly, they find themselves back in the world of espionage and secrets. And that takes some getting used to.
Love is Blind Germany season 1 (from January 3)
The creators of ‘Love is Blind’ have packed their bags again, and this time the journey goes to Germany. Fortunately, nothing has changed about our old familiar concept. Once again, singles are looking for love with only each other’s voice. By now, we know that it doesn’t really matter where the experiment takes place; it will be a whole lot of drama anyway. Cozy with a blanket on the couch giving our unfiltered opinions; I can think of a worse way to start the year.
Ad Vitam (January 10)
With Swedish, Norwegian, and Spanish films and series in the top lists, non-English titles seem to be becoming bigger competition. Netflix happily continues this success with their new French-language film ‘Ad Vitam’. And that seems to be a good move. In this action thriller, we follow Franck Lazarev (Guillaume Canet), a former member of the French anti-terrorism unit the Elite Intervention Squad (GIGN). After Franck barely survives an assassination attempt, he must search for his kidnapped wife Léo (Stéphane Caillard). He gets caught up in a dangerous and personal state affair and comes face to face with his past.
