New on Netflix in July

With this summer weather, we all take it a bit easy, but Netflix thinks very differently about that. They are adding a hefty list of new titles again this month. Perfect for us; we can now escape the heat indoors with an air conditioner or fan and binge-watch comfortably. I’ll go through the most fun movies and series with you, with which you can cool off nicely; although watching outside under a parasol and also tanning a bit is of course not wrong either.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (July 16 on Netflix)
For fans of ‘The Hunger Games’, it’s an exciting but also frustrating time. After we were completely thrilled by the announcement of the casting for the latest ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’, we also realize that we still have to wait almost a year and a half for that film. To ease that pain a bit, Netflix is adding the other prequel this month: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The story about the tenth Hunger Games and how President Snow got involved in the games. With this addition, and that of Mockingjay part 2, the entire series is now available on Netflix. So, there can still be quite a few movie marathons planned to fill the waiting time until the latest film.
Building the Band season 1 (July 9 on Netflix)
What do you get when you mix ‘X-factor’ and ‘Love is Blind’? Exactly that mix forms the basis for the new show ‘Building the Band’. Fifty singers participate in this singing competition, and they will ultimately form six bands. They make that selection completely blind, in pods as we know from ‘Love is Blind’; it’s really all about someone’s voice. For fans of One Direction, it will be an extra special series. Singer Liam Payne, who passed away last October, is one of the guest judges; it was one of the last major projects he worked on.
Harriet (July 22 on Netflix)
After the huge hype surrounding ‘Wicked’, you couldn’t ignore her anymore: Cynthia Erivo. But before she transformed into the green witch Elphaba, she played the lead role in a very different film: ‘Harriet’. She tells the story of the American freedom fighter Harriet Tubman. A woman who escaped from slavery in 1849 and then dedicated herself to freeing hundreds of other slaves. It’s an impressive film, with a good soundtrack that Cynthia is also a part of. And we now know how well she can sing.
Soleil Noir season 1 (July 9 on Netflix)
Maybe you’ve already planned a trip to France this summer; if not, you can also just bring the country here. For example, with the new Netflix series ‘Soleil Noir’. However, this will not be a light, summery story, but a mysterious crime thriller. The series tells the story of Alba, a young mother who wants to build a new life in Provence with her son. She finds work at a prestigious flower nursery and seems to finally be getting everything back on track. But that changes when the boss of the nursery is suddenly murdered. Alba is seen as the main suspect, but her role soon becomes much more complicated. The murdered owner turns out to be her biological father, and she is his only heir. As Alba discovers more and more secrets from the past, she must do everything to protect herself and her son, and to prove that she is innocent.
Brick (July 10 on Netflix)
We’ll stay with the thrillers, but travel to Germany. There we find the new film ‘Brick’. What starts as a normal day for Tim and Olivia changes when they want to leave their apartment. It turns out a huge wall has been built around their flat, and no one can get in or out; they seem to be stuck in a real-life escape room. Breaking through the wall doesn’t work, so they will have to work together with their neighbors to figure out what’s going on and how they can escape. But as the panic and frustration inside only increase, it becomes increasingly difficult to find the way out.
Conversations with a Killer: The Son of Sam Tapes season 1 (July 30 on Netflix)
For true crime fans, it’s now a well-known series: ‘Conversations with a Killer’. After Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Jeffrey Dahmer, this fourth season again focuses on serial killer David Berkowitz, who was known as “Son of Sam”. On July 29, 1976, he opened fire on two random students in New York. It was the beginning of a year in which he held the city in his grip and committed multiple murders; until he was caught in 1977. The docuseries examines his past and the various murders and features journalists, detectives, and survivors of his attacks. The creators investigate the impact of Berkowitz’s actions, trying to provide insight into his complex mind.
What Men Want (July 8 on Netflix)
Amid all the thrilling thrillers and true crime docs, Netflix also makes some room for something lighter; for example, the romantic comedy ‘What Men Want’. Imagine there’s a drink that suddenly allows you to hear the thoughts of all men, would you drink it? Sports agent Ali Davis gets the drink without realizing it at a party, but it actually works out quite well. Ali just missed out on a promotion and is desperately looking for a way to really fit into this male-dominated world. Being able to hear the thoughts of her male colleagues gives her some interesting insights.
