New on Netflix in May

In May, one day it feels like the height of summer and the next day the umbrella is your best friend. The weather can go in all directions, and the Netflix offerings this month are exactly the same. From intense crime series to light-hearted comedies, your watchlist will definitely have enough variety. I'll go through the best movies and series with you, so that for every mood there’s a fitting new title.
Dune: Part Two (May 21 on Netflix)
Good news for all my fellow Timothée Chalamet fans: after that delightful ‘Wonka’ film, another one of his gems is coming to Netflix this month. ‘Dune: Part Two’ picks up where the first part left off. Paul Atreides (Chalamet) manages to escape with his mother from the attack on his family. As they join the Fremen, the desert dwellers of the planet Arrakis, Paul prepares a plan to avenge his family. With Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Zendaya, and Rebecca Ferguson also in the cast, those five Oscar nominations were no surprise. The 2 hours and 45 minutes might be quite a sit; but believe me, it’s worth it.
Soccer Parents Season 1 (May 16 on Netflix)
After ‘Haantjes’, it’s time for the next Dutch comedy. ‘Soccer Parents’ is written and directed by Ilse Warringa, who we mainly know from ‘De Luizenmoeder’, and she also plays the lead role herself. Warringa received a ‘no shouting and cheering’ ban from her children when she came to watch their sports matches, the inspiration for the story of her new series. Because we all know those slightly too enthusiastic parents on the sidelines, right?
Nonnas (May 9 on Netflix)
There are many things that make Italy so delightful; one of them is of course the food that is always made with love and passion. That’s exactly what the new comedy ‘Nonnas’ is about. After the death of his mother, Joe (Vince Vaughn) looks for a way to honor her. He decides to open a restaurant where four ‘nonna’s’ from different parts of Italy compile their family recipes to create the tastiest dishes. And with all those temperaments together, it doesn’t go completely smoothly. What makes the film even better: it’s based on a true story.
Reservatet (Secrets We Keep) Season 1 (May 15 on Netflix)
Very different from a sweet comedy, is the crime series ‘Secrets We Keep’. A little plus point beforehand: the series comes from Scandinavia again; this time we’re not heading to Sweden, but the Danish capital Copenhagen is the setting for a lot of mystery. In ‘Reservatet’, as the series is actually called, we follow Cecilie (Marie Bach Hansen), who lives in a wealthy neighborhood of the city. When her neighbor's au pair disappears, Cecilie decides to start an investigation herself. But the further she gets, the more her own family becomes involved in the case. She can no longer escape the past.
La viuda negra (A Widow’s Game) (May 30 on Netflix)
We’re still in the crime genre, although we’re moving to Spain for this film. In the true crime-based ‘La viuda negra’, or ‘A Widow’s Game’ in English, the police of Valencia dives into a murder investigation after the discovery of a man's body. Soon, the arrows point to Maje (Ivana Baquero), the young widow of the victim. An unexpected main suspect; the couple had only been married for a year and Maje is mainly known as a sweet and gentle person. But, is that image correct?
Forever Season 1 (May 8 on Netflix)
One thing we can all agree on: love can sometimes be quite complicated. Especially when you discover everything for the first time in the new series ‘Forever’, we follow Keisha (Lovie Simone) and Justin (Michael Cooper Jr.); as kids, they were good friends, but in high school, the spark finally ignites. Together they discover each other, love, and also sex; with all the awkward situations that come with it. And with the social pressure of high school life and parents who also interfere, it all becomes just a bit more complicated. The eponymous book by author Judy Blume is known for its somewhat spicy scenes, so that promises something for the series.
Fear Street: Prom Queen (May 23 on Netflix)
I had already warned a bit, but we’re taking another step into a completely different genre than romance. This month, horror fans can also add to their watchlist again. On May 23, ‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ will be released, the fourth part in the now successful ‘Fear Street’ series. We return to Shadyside in the late 1980s, where the battle for the title of prom queen is in full swing. But when the candidates are brutally murdered one by one, chaos really breaks loose.
