New on Netflix in October

Knock, knock! The ‘spooky, scary skeleton’ season is upon us: October has officially begun. Not in the mood to scream your way out of the haunted house? Thanks to Netflix, you can just seek out the thrills from your own couch. But for my fellow scaredy-cats, there are plenty of titles coming that won’t let us sleep with an extra nightlight. I’ll go through the best movies and series with you, so you can get through this first full autumn month; as spooky as you want.
The Woman in Cabin 10 (October 10 on Netflix)
Let’s start off a bit slowly; although a psychological thriller can certainly be quite creepy. ‘The Woman in Cabin 10’ will definitely be that. The film is based on the book of the same name and follows the story of Laura Blacklock (Keira Knightley). The journalist gets to join a luxury cruise ship to report on its very first voyage. Sounds lovely, right? Well, not exactly. Once on the boat, she sees how a fellow passenger is thrown overboard. The big problem: there were no other witnesses and no one seems to believe her. And with a ship full of powerful elites, it seems impossible to uncover the truth. The more Laura tries to prove what really happened, the more she puts herself in danger. This ‘luxury’ trip is not exactly a dream vacation.
Monster: The Ed Gein Story (October 3 on Netflix)
Okay, enough with taking it easy. ‘Monster’ is back this month. Did you think it couldn’t get any more intense after ‘Dahmer’ and ‘The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’? Oh boy, it definitely can. In season 3, we meet Ed Gein. He may not be the man with the most murders; but what he did to his victims, I hope you have a strong stomach. He was not without reason the inspiration behind several horror films. Just the trailer gives you chills all over; and believe me, it gets even worse when you realize that this man really existed. To all true crime lovers and horror fans: starting October 3, you can go wild. We wish you a bit of strength, just to be safe.
Halloween (October 7 on Netflix)
Now that we’ve got that spooky feeling going. A real horror classic cannot be missing from this list, of course. They probably thought the same at Netflix, and so they’re adding ‘Halloween’ this month. I’m talking about the 2018 version, the sequel to the original from 1978. After narrowly escaping the terrifying murderer Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney), Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) thinks about him almost daily. The fear dominates Laurie’s life and isolates her more and more from her family. He may have been locked up for 40 years, but that’s no comfort. What if he suddenly returns? The day before Halloween, what Laurie has been afraid of all these years happens: Michael Myers escapes from prison; and he plans to correct his previous mistake. Maybe check if the front door is locked before you go to sleep.
Nobody Wants This season 2 (October 23 on Netflix)
Time for a breather. Season 2 of ‘Nobody Wants This’ really couldn’t have waited any longer. Let’s recap: after quite a few complicated yes-no situations, Joanne (Kristen Bell) and Noah (Adam Brody) made the decision: their love takes priority; whether Joanne converts to Judaism or not will come later. But yes, as lovely as that pink bubble is, completely escaping their big dilemma isn’t possible either. How many compromises can and do you want to make for love? Perhaps the most fun this season: Leighton Meester plays a guest role as Joanne’s high school nemesis. Meester is of course married to Brody in real life, so this will be iconic no matter what. I’m curious about what Gossip Girl practices await us. Bring on those episodes.
A House of Dynamite (October 24 on Netflix)
Horror isn’t the only thing that will create tension this month. According to experts, we should also prepare for an intense movie night with the political thriller ‘A House of Dynamite’. After its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, the audience applauded for about 11 minutes. In the film, an impending nuclear missile causes great panic in the US. Everyone in the White House, the Pentagon, and the president tries to figure out how to deal with this threat in a race against time. But with an unknown enemy, that seems almost impossible. Starting October 9, the film will also briefly be in theaters, but with a bit of patience, you can watch it from your own couch starting the 24th; that’s nice too. Oh, and did I mention that Idris Elba plays one of the lead roles?
Victoria Beckham (October 9 on Netflix)
With some celebs, you just want to be a fly on the wall, right? Sneak a peek to see if their life is really that glamorous. If we get to choose, Victoria Beckham is very high on our wish list; and luckily Netflix can read our minds. In her three-part docuseries ‘Victoria Beckham’ the doors of the Beckham residence are wide open. From the mega success with the Spice Girls to her much-discussed relationship with David and her daring step into the world of fashion. The whole book is opened. Meanwhile, we also follow her in the preparation of her show during Paris Fashion Week. David and the kids are also front row, but will we see Brooklyn and Nicola? That’s the question…
Caramelo
For everyone who prefers to skip spooky season: Netflix has thought of you too. And with a title for which the tissues can be ready. In the Brazilian film ‘Caramelo’, we follow Pedro (Rafael Vitti), an ambitious chef who is about to make his culinary dream come true. That plan falls apart when Pedro unexpectedly falls ill. His whole life changes, except for one thing: Caramelo, his caramel-colored stray dog, is still by his side. And that bond may become more important than it has ever been. The perfect movie to snuggle up with your own fur baby on the couch. It doesn’t get better than this, right?
