This way you always have the right color foundation

The biggest foundation struggle is definitely the color. Because where one shade is too light, the other is too warm, too cool, or too dark. So I often find myself stuck in between. A brand can of course also hardly have hundreds of colors in their collection, because such a shade is just very personal. Or even worse: it can change every day. When the weather is long gray and dull outside, your skin looks so different than when the sun has shone for a few days. Color, then. Very. Complicated.

So when I saw the BoldHue TikTok makeup artist, Kate Jane Hughes, I couldn't wait to add it to my cart (after watching the video, of course). Why? I'll explain – and no, this is not an advertisement. Just a beauty junkie who gets very excited about this., kon ik (na het afkijken van de video, natúúrlijk) niet wachten om deze gelijk in mijn winkelmandje te shoppen. Waarom? Ik leg het je uit – en nee, dit is geen advertentie. Gewoon een beauty-junkie die hier heel enthousiast van wordt.

The future of foundation

The brain behind BoldHue is Karin Layton, the co-founder of the brand. This super smart woman first worked as an aerospace engineer for NASA (pretty cool, right?). After years of buying foundation that didn't match her skin tone, she had her own ‘aha moment’. Karin thought: ‘What if I combine my knowledge of color theory with my engineering background?’ Five years and five test versions later, she and the team had the solution: a device that allows you to create your own perfect foundation. Yes, really.

How does the BoldHue Smart device work?

Of course, we already had the lipstick maker from Yves Saint Laurent (Rouge Sur Mesure Device), which allows you to create a personal lipstick color via an app. This is now also possible with foundation, but this device is a bit more technical. Because this device is real science. Within one minute and with one push of a button, you get a fresh foundation that is completely tailored to your skin tone. The device works by holding a special type of scanner that comes with the device against your forehead, chin, and neck. It scans your skin in these three different areas and blocks all other light around your skin, so it captures the true color of your skin. The result? Your unique shade, in exactly the right color.

Personalized foundation shades

BoldHue uses six cartridges to mix your foundation. In addition to the usual three colors (red, yellow, and black), they also add a blue cartridge. And now you might feel that these colors are meant to make yourself look like a clown, but that's far from the case. Blue is actually a neutralizing color that helps create deep, rich tones and very light shades. That means millions of shades that perfectly match your skin. The foundation has a medium to light coverage; you can build it up for more coverage or apply it very lightly for that tinted moisturizer feel. And because it's exactly your shade, it looks like you're really wearing nothing at all.

How do you apply BoldHue foundation?

You take your personalized foundation from the bottom of the device, where you have previously placed a small container. With a spatula, you mix the colors well until it becomes a nice whole and you no longer see red, yellow, black, white, or blue, and voilà. Time to apply. This can be done with your fingers, a brush, or a BeautyBlender, whatever you prefer. You can supposedly get a week out of one scan, but not everyone agrees with that. A few days at most, because then you really need new ones again. Just like the cartridges, which last a year but also run out regularly. You can also just reorder these one by one.

So I get mega excited about this, only one small downside: you can't order it in the Netherlands yet. Are you by any chance in the US? Go for it! But just like with Rhode, if we just have a little patience, we can soon have BoldHue delivered in the Netherlands. Is this then the future of foundation?
