Bodem season 2 is here and it exceeds all expectations

Maybe you were already a fan, or you don't know the series yet (pay close attention), but we really need to talk about ‘Bodem’; the Dutch tragicomedy conceived, written, and directed by actress and cabaret artist Eva Crutzen, who also plays the lead role. Yes, really, she does it all, and how. Season 1 was a mega hit, and it’s hard to top that. Don't worry, season 2 is here and I can tell you: this might be even better.

What you need to know about Bodem season 1

If you haven't seen the series yet or just need a recap, here's a brief overview. Be warned, there may be spoilers, but we won't give too much away. In season 1, we meet the single and sometimes destructive Cat (Eva Crutzen). After the loss of her brother, her life comes to a standstill. Cat wants nothing more than to disappear, and she does so with alcohol, drugs, and the necessary one night stands. While everyone around her settles down, builds a career, and has children, she wants nothing to do with it.

When her best friend Jana (Meral Polat) gets pregnant and stops partying, Cat is even more alone. She can't count on her emotionally absent parents, and her job has seen better days. Behind all this destructive behavior lies a lot of trauma; problems that Cat will ultimately have to face. This realization becomes increasingly clear as we approach the season finale. It's time for change – time for a new version of Cat.

Season 2 of Bodem: What awaits Cat?

In season 2, Cat turns her life around 180 degrees and tries to get her life back on track. The bottles of alcohol are tucked away at the back of the cupboard, the ashtray is emptied, and she has declared herself a self-employed funeral director. So far, so good; with her fortieth birthday in sight, it was about time. Cat does her utmost to get everything under control, but she can't completely let go of her destructive behavior. However, one reckless night turns everything upside down, and then stability proves to be easier said than done. Cat is once again faced with fundamental questions: does she hold on to the carefully constructed image, or does she dare to change course again? With a chaotic family, complicated friendships, and a new job, it certainly won't be calm for a while.

The absolute strength of Bodem

‘Bodem’ is definitely not a standard comedy series, and that has everything to do with the surrealism. Cat has a, let's say, rather rich imagination, and she regularly takes us as viewers along with her. So don't be surprised if you suddenly find yourself in a dance sequence in the middle of a scene, or when Cat receives advice from her deceased brother. Eva Crutzen told RTL Boulevard that she has always been a fan of shamelessness: vanity is, after all, boring. And in this second season, she takes it to a new level. It doesn't have to be so polished, because real life isn't either. And that’s exactly what makes the series, however absurd it may sometimes be, so relatable and of course mega funny.

Bodem receives all the praise: a shower of awards and top reviews

It’s clear: we are fans. But we are certainly not the only ones. With an IMDb score of 8, four stars from, among others, the Volkskrant, and a stream of positive reactions on social media, Eva Crutzen is surely sitting on the couch with a smile. And probably with a good view of the awards the series has already collected. For season 1, she received a Golden Calf for best lead role, and for the second season, she was also awarded best director. The words “one of the best Dutch series ever” have already been mentioned, and to be honest: we understand why.

Will Bodem get a sequel?

With such a mega success, there is naturally only one question: will there be a sequel? Good news, and we mean very good news. “There are plans for a third season, and also plans for a movie,” said Eva Crutzen at the table with Lubach. But first, the actress is taking some time to chill and recover. Still, as she says herself: “There might be something brewing again.” Sounds like a delightful prospect, right? And for now, we can certainly still entertain ourselves, as seasons 1 and 2 of ‘Bodem’ are ready on NPO Start.
