Thriller fans pay attention: Untamed on Netflix will be your next favorite

All that hiking and sightseeing interrupted to relax on your beach bed with a series is of course delightful. But you don't want to waste your entire vacation on something you can also do in the Netherlands. Mini-series are therefore ideal, and Netflix understands this all too well. The crime thriller ‘Untamed’ is the new number one; and with six episodes, it fits perfectly within your summer trip. Although it may be questionable whether you will really relax from it.

This is what you need to know about the story of Untamed
Kyle Turner (Eric Bana) is a special agent for the National Park Service of Yosemite National Park. When he is asked to help with an incident, you already know that something is seriously wrong. After the discovery of the body of a young woman in the middle of the park, it is up to him to find out exactly what happened. And in an area as vast and unspoiled as this, that is not exactly easy. Every step Turner seems to take closer to a breakthrough also brings a mountain of new questions. To make it all a bit more complicated, an old missing persons case resurfaces. A case that confronts Turner with the past he so desperately wants to leave behind. The pressure continues to mount, and doubts arise in his surroundings about whether the agent still has control over himself and the investigation. Turner is determined to solve the case, if only to prevent more victims from falling.
The filming locations of Untamed are beautiful, but also misleading
The story of ‘Untamed’ takes place almost entirely in and around Yosemite National Park in California. Specific locations in the park are even mentioned by name and play an important role in the series. Meanwhile, none of it was actually filmed here. For the recordings, the cast and crew gathered in Vancouver in Canada. There they worked in Chip Kerr Park, a location where the Emmy-winning series ‘Shōgun’ was also filmed, and ‘just inside’ North Shore Studios. If you pay close attention, you can spot images of Yosemite, but these are just aerial shots. Once the actors come back into view, you are actually somewhere else. Still just as beautiful, but a bit misleading.

Maybe not A-listers, but certainly not the least cast
The names on the call sheet of ‘Untamed’ may not ring a bell immediately, yet there is a good chance you have seen the actors before. Lead actor Eric Bana has quite a few titles on his resume; including the big films ‘Troy’, ‘Hulk’, and, a personal favorite, ‘The Other Boleyn Girl’. Rosemarie DeWitt, who plays Turner's ex-wife, was seen on the big screen last year in the horror sequel ‘Smile 2’ and earlier in the hit ‘La La Land’. Sam Neill traded the world of ‘Peaky Blinders’ and that of the ‘Jurassic Park’ series for a murder mystery in the wild, joining ‘Untamed’ as the chief park ranger and Turner's mentor. Naming the entire cast would take a while, but you understand that a lot of experience has been gathered; and not without result.
Is there going to be a season 2 of Untamed?
It is no longer a surprise, but the question for a second season of this hit series is already bubbling up again. At first glance, it seemed that we could soon abandon that hope. The series was set up as a mini-series, which means it was planned from the start to ensure a clear ending to the story. Eric Bana also indicated in interviews that there was no intention for a second season during the filming. Yet there is still a glimmer of hope. Showrunner Elle Smith is actually a lot more positive. She made the series together with her father Mark L. Smith and sees opportunities to do it again. “We would do this forever if we get the chance. Turner can end up in any park, each time with a different investigation. That idea appealed to us.” So the ending that the creators had in mind was not as definitive as it seemed, and we are happy to hear that. What will ultimately happen will all be determined by the success of these first six episodes. The reactions so far have been positive, but that doesn't always mean much. So there is nothing else to do but wait, which is generally less favored by series lovers.
