Why Dakota Johnson is the it-girl of the moment

(and really is going to stay for a while)

Whether you are talking about her much-discussed relationship with Role Model, an almost naked advertisement for Calvin Klein, her trending film Verity or a surprise appearance on SNL: Dakota Johnson is truly everywhere. The internet seems unable to stop talking about the brunette actress and I totally get it. Besides her amazing style and hairstyle that everyone tries to imitate, she steals the show with her dry humor. But what is it that has put her on the map so much that she suddenly cannot be imagined out of the Hollywood scene? We know: this is why Dakota Johnson is the it-girl of the moment and she’s not going anywhere.

It all started with that one Architectural Digest interview

Not her entire career, of course. Dakota’s acting dream began with the film Fifty Shades of Grey. The then 24-year-old actress became globally known as student Anastasia Steele, who gets caught in an erotic web of the rich and handsome Christian Grey. Although she had already appeared in some projects like Ben and Kate, The High Note and Our Friend, the Fifty Shades-trilogy was a real breakthrough for her. After these films, she appeared in increasingly larger films and series with the biggest co-stars like Pedro Pascal, Jessie Buckley, Olivia Goldman, Armie Hammer, Sean Penn, and Chris Evans.

And since we’re talking about our fascination with Dakota, we really have to mention those lemons. This is actually what has made her a real internet personality that many love. In 2020, she gave an Architectural Digest tour of her home. In her green kitchen, there was a bowl full of lemons. She casually mentioned that she loved that green fruit and that she thought it was ‘great to present it like this in her home’. Well, fine, you might think. But Dakota? She was flat-out lying. Some time later, she told Jimmy Fallon that this was fake and that she was actually allergic to lemons. She didn’t even know they were there. Sorry, but how do you come up with this? Besides her interior, the internet became obsessed with her from that moment on.

Her dry humor makes her just a bit different

It is precisely that honest personality that makes Dakota truly an it-girl. Dakota can say something completely absurd with the same facial expression you use when ordering food. You know, with that calm voice, a little smile, and a comment that you only think about two seconds later: wait a minute. And then of course we have that interview with Ellen DeGeneres. When Ellen claimed she wasn't invited to Dakota's birthday, Dakota immediately corrected her: “Actually, no, that’s not the truth, Ellen.” She had indeed invited her. What followed was one of those awkward conversations that you actually want to look away from, but then you end up replaying it three times. Meanwhile, Dakota remained wonderfully calm.

Also during the promotion of Madame Web her interviews generated plenty of memes. Ask her about her experience at The Office and you’ll just hear that she found it terrible. That’s what makes her interviews fun: you never really know what answer you’re going to get. Dakota has something of that friend who says little during dinner, but with one comment makes the whole table cry with laughter. And just because she delivers her jokes so dryly, you want to keep watching. Was this serious? Is she joking? Is she pulling the interviewer’s leg? Probably a bit of all.

Dakota Johnson’s style is something you want to save on Pinterest immediately

Then there’s something else that makes Dakota popular: her wardrobe and hairstyle. Because aside from those interviews, Dakota has something else we love to look at: her outfits. A good pair of jeans, a blazer, loafers, and sunglasses. It sounds like something you could pull out of your own closet, but with her, you want to take a screenshot right away. Her daily style often revolves around calm colors and beautiful basics, with help from her regular stylist Kate Young. She radiates something very simple: her outfits can be worn to the office or a lunch without needing to have a movie premiere on the agenda. Although it probably helps if those basics come from The Row, Saint Laurent, or Gucci. My own white T-shirt unfortunately has a slightly different budget.

The other thing that has solidified her it-status, I just mentioned: her hairstyle. The Dakota Johnson bangs have now become a real hairstyle that people ask for at their hairdresser. And we understand why. Those full bangs that just touch her eyebrows, with soft strands that fall apart a bit, immediately give her that French look. As if she just ran her hands through her hair and then walked out the door. Exactly the kind of hairstyle for which I would sit at the hairdresser with a screenshot. Her hair color also helps: Dakota now has a deep espresso brown shade with a lot of shine. Her color stylist calls it ‘glossed espresso’, which sounds like my next coffee order, but can also go on the list for the hairdresser. Bangs, shiny brown hair, and a good pair of sunglasses. Apparently, that's all I need to think that I should completely change my look. Is this my sign to stop with highlights and go brunette? Mmm…

So Dakota is a real it-girl. We want her wardrobe, take her photo to the hairdresser, and click on every interview because she might say something that we’ll still be laughing about three days later. Meanwhile, she seems to just shrug her shoulders at all that attention. Maybe that’s what makes her so likable: we’re busy with Dakota Johnson, while Dakota Johnson is just lying somewhere by the pool reading her next film script like she has the most ordinary job ever. I’ll definitely keep watching her. And that hairdresser appointment? I’ll think about that for a bit longer.
