May's Favorites: How to stay fit on vacation
Going on vacation is wonderful, but maintaining your workout rhythm remains difficult. After five weeks of vacation, I didn't want to return to the Pilates studio stiff and out of shape. That's why I brought a few simple tools to stay a bit active on the go.

Wireless jump rope
I don't know about you, but I'm a clown when it comes to jumping rope. I know it's an intensely good exercise to strengthen your core and improve your fitness, but I stumble over the rope about every ten jumps. A friend from the Pilates studio recommended a cordless rope, or a jump rope without a rope. The handles measure your jumps, the time, and the number of calories you've burned. I jumped 1000 times every day and took about seven minutes to do so, and quickly burned 250 calories. I could then order another Aperol on the terrace.

Bala hand weights
I'm a fan of Bala tools anyway. I also have weights that you can attach to your ankles or wrists with Velcro. For our road trip through France and Spain, I took these hand weights with me in the car. They weigh 1.3 kilos each and feel nice in the hand. I took them with me during a walk or did arm exercises with them. I wouldn't take them on the plane, or possibly in your carry-on if you haven't reached your weight limit yet, but in the car, it was ideal.

Weighted vest
Walking is perfect as a workout. Models often recommend walking 20,000 steps every day, don't be shocked. That may sound like a lot, and it is, but just think about how good it is for your body and mind. Podcast on and go. If you also wear a weighted vest, your fitness will increase dramatically. The same goes for this: not on the plane. Aside from the weight – my vest weighs 10 kilos – I'm afraid it won't pass through customs. But if you're going on vacation by car, it's ideal. It takes some getting used to, but ultimately wearing such a vest is almost pleasant.
