New on Netflix: August

Ah, finally. We are back in August. It’s the height of summer and you can tell not just by the terrible heat. Even if you’re not traveling and just working, you make a bit more time for yourself during this period. After a long workday, you now make just a bit more effort to grab a drink on a terrace with your friends, take a longer walk with the dog, or, like me, take more time to watch a nice movie or series. I avoid that warm weather like the plague, so some new entertainment is always welcome. Curious about what’s coming this month? Sit back, because there’s a lot of good stuff.

1. 72 Hours

What do you get when you mix The Hangover and Kevin Hart in a bowl? 72 Hours. If you feel like laughing hard for more than an hour and a half, then this is the movie for you. Joe, a forty-year-old man who is clearly in a midlife crisis, unexpectedly receives a phone call. While he’s on the line with his girlfriend, he suddenly gets added to a group chat. It’s about a bachelor weekend in Miami. He doesn’t know who these guys are, but oh well. Joe is too old for a weekend of partying anyway. Right? That’s what he thought too, until he doesn’t get his dream promotion. Angry at the whole world, he decides it’s time to find his youth again and goes to the weekend. And that goes, uh, smoothly. Just like in The Hangover he gets overwhelmed by drugs and alcohol. And that goes spectacularly wrong. Think of Marcello from SNL and a party that leads to drug lords and the army.

2. Death on the Nile

Okay, caught: I know this movie came out four years ago. But it’s only now on Netflix, so it’s allowed. After solving the murder on the Orient Express, Belgian detective Hercule Poirot faces a new mystery. Not because he’s chasing a murderer himself, mind you. No, Hercule is on a well-deserved vacation. His journey on a luxury steamboat started off very ‘pleasant’, but fate soon intervenes: the wife of a newlywed couple is murdered. And it’s up to him to unravel the secret and find the culprit.

3. Sinners

You no longer have to sneak into the cinema to see Michael B. Jordan. Sinners, in which he plays a vampire twin, is now officially on our favorite platform. We’ve written about this horror film before, because this gem? You want to see it. In this story, we follow the twins Stack and Smoke. After a chaotic life in the gangs of Chicago, it’s time to go back home. They’re done with all the noise, but back home in Mississippi, there’s no warm welcome committee waiting for them. The black community is being plagued by racism. To make something of their lives, they decide to open a bar. That sounds like the biggest obstacle, but spoiler alert: it’s not. The biggest, baddest of them all is Remmick. After a successful opening, he throws a wrench in the works. He’s looking for blood, specifically that of the younger nephew of the twins, Sammie.

4. My Life with the Walter Boys season 3 (from August 6)

Did you think The Summer I Turned Pretty was amazing? Read on. My Life with the Walter Boys is actually her little sister. When Jackie loses her family in a tragic car accident, she moves to Colorado. There, she moves in on the ranch of the Walter family, where the brothers Cole and Alex try to win her over. After a love triangle that is so passionately annoying that you almost want to run away from it, Jackie returned to the ranch in season two. After a glow-up from Alex, who suddenly acts like the confident cowboy, she chooses Cole despite her doubts and feelings for him. The three main characters didn’t really have the time to talk out the drama (because Alex obviously heard that love confession). George suddenly collapsed. So this new season starts anything but boring, because there’s a new hottie in town. Eliot, Uncle Richard’s intern, comes to test the love between Jackie and Cole.

5. Inception (from August 7)

A cult classic deserves a spot on this list. This is one of those movies that you don’t understand at first, but ultimately find so thrilling that you don’t even want to pause the movie to go to the bathroom. Before Christopher Nolan surrendered to The Odyssey he made Inception with Leonardo DiCaprio, Cillian Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, and Elliot Page. And if those names don’t convince you to watch this movie, then I’ll spell it out for you. Inception is about Dom Cobb (Leonardo). He is a sought-after thief who steals secrets by fabricating the dreams of his victims. That sounds as insane as it is; thanks to this gift, he is the favorite for corporate espionage, but also one of the most wanted criminals in the whole world. Now that he has lost everything that was ever dear to him, he decides to take on one last job. This is his chance to get his old life back. Together with a team of specialists, he must commit ‘the perfect crime’.

6. Mission Impossible 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (from August 7)

Tuduuuuu, tududuuuuu. Tududu du. Do you recognize that tune? Not without a soundbite, of course. But as soon as I sketch a scene, you know it immediately. Imagine: Tom Cruise hanging on a black cable while he slowly sinks into a secured room. While he’s trying to steal some chip to save the world, the well-known Mission Impossible tune plays in the background. Is a bell ringing? Great. Because these classics are finally on Netflix. In two days, you can see all the adventures of Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team. Sometimes they fight against corrupt agents, other times against Russian villains, and then again against a secret syndicate that wants to take over the whole world. Anything can happen in Mission Impossible. Even hanging from a building in Abu Dhabi to get the job done.

7. Conversation with a killer: the charles manson tapes (August 12)

If you know anything about Amayzine, it’s that we love agood crime documentary . After stories about disturbed neighbors, stalkers, and Ted Bundy, we can add a new doc to our watchlist: The Charles Manson Tapes. This time we follow cult leader Charles Manson, who murdered the Manson family in 1969. By watching interviews with family members and law enforcement officers, you get a glimpse of the media circus and the gruesome murders. And as if that’s not enough, we also hear from Manson himself. Through recorded phone calls, we get the chance to crawl into his head.

8. My Brilliant Career (from August 13)

No, this is not Jane Austen. But it does look suspiciously similar. In this period drama, we can enjoy good costumes, funny quotes, and a woman who is too ambitious for her time. Sybylla is a passionate writer with big dreams. Even when everything goes against her and her family tries to pair her with every potential man, she knows what she wants: to become famous. Before this girl lets herself be paired with a dusty, old man, she decides to live first. She literally runs away from her worries to find her independence. But that newfound independence is once again at stake when she unexpectedly falls in love. Oops.
