New on Netflix: July

By

Now that we seem to be spending some time on a tropical island this coming weekend, we need something to do. Something you can do on the couch, with the air conditioning on full blast. Like watching a new movie, for example? Forget your work, forget the appointments that are way too warm for: focus on some entertainment, because a lot of new titles are coming to Netflix this month. Whether you go for a Dutch summer movie like Summer in France or Practical Magic to pretend you’re living in autumn: you can choose from all this news.

Enola Holmes 3 (July 1 on Netflix)

Our favorite detective Enola (Millie Bobby Brown) is about to get married. Although she has given her heart to solving mysteries, there is certainly still a place for Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge). At the moment she is on her way to the altar, she discovers something: her brother has been kidnapped. You know, Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill). And yes... you need a Holmes to save a Holmes. So Enola? She skips the wedding to save her brother at all costs. Oh, and it also helps her escape the doubts about her marriage.

Moonlight (July 1 on Netflix)

With no less than three Oscars in the pocket, this is one of the best ‘new’ releases on Netflix. Okay, the movie isn't new, but it has only been on the streaming service for a week. So: yes, you really want to see Moonlight. Why? Because this is a very beautiful story. In three different parts, we see how Chiron grows up as a shy, dark boy in a poor neighborhood. As a gay boy, he already has a hard time, but his financial situation makes it even harder. We follow him as he tries to discover who he is and deals with drugs, violence, and all the harshness of life.

Postcards from the Edge (July 1 on Netflix)

A Meryl Streep movie that we haven't seen yet? That belongs in this list. Postcards from the Edge is about the drug-addicted actress Suzanne Vale (Meryl Streep), who is trying to get her life back on track after finally kicking her habit. Although she is doing well, Suzanne's past continues to haunt her: she is only allowed to film under supervision. Amid all the drama, she also tries to grow out of the shadow of her terribly famous mother. This is one of those Meryl classics that you want to see, just for the experience. Did I mention that Dennis Quaid plays the love interest? No? Then you have another reason to see it.

Run (July 1 on Netflix)

A psychological thriller with Sarah Paulson that is now number three in the Netherlands? That sounds like a recipe for a good movie. This is a case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, because in Run we follow Chloe, who suspects that her mother is intentionally making her sick. After living in isolation for years due to her health problems, the teenager is ready for freedom. And her mother just doesn't want to give her that. To spread her wings, Chloe goes on an investigation: is she really sick?

Summer in France (July 1 on Netflix)

American movies are fun, but Dutch blockbusters can also be great. In this summery atmosphere, we want just one thing: to go on vacation. I, who unfortunately won't be going away this summer, just want to daydream about the vacation stories of others. Dua Lipa cruising through Italy for her honeymoon, my friends going to surf camp in Portugal, or like Walt and Marie. After hundreds of trips, these best friends choose to go to France together. During the vacation, feelings suddenly arise. Or rather, they were always there, but they deny it. Unexpectedly, they fit together better than they thought. Finding your soulmate in a friend sounds like a dream, but it’s more of a nightmare... Because these two? They are just in relationships with other people. Oops.

Friends (July 2 on Netflix)

We’ll be there for you, because we have good news: you no longer have to scour your TV guide on Comedy Central to find out when they are airing a Friends episode again. The entire series is available on Netflix starting this month. Yes: seriously. You can enjoy Joey and Chandler's jokes, Rachel's fashion advice, Ross's crazy antics, Monica's good lessons, and all the drama that comes with it. Time for a rewatch? I think so.

Survival of the Thickest season 3 (July 2 on Netflix)

Hello hello, Mavis is back and better than ever. For those who don't know her, let us introduce her: she is 38, funny, stunningly beautiful, and has everything her heart desires. She is a stylist and has been with her great love for five years. Everything seems to be going well until her boyfriend cheats on her. Now is the time to choose for herself and her career. Season 3, in which Mavis finally breaks through at the Oscars, is now available. Are you in the mood for a comedy with real women power? Then this is for you.

Nosferatu (July 5 on Netflix)

It was one of the most acclaimed gothic horror films of 2024: Nosferatu with Lily-Rose Depp. So you no longer have to be scared in the cinema, you can just do that at home under a blanket. In Nosferatu, realtor Thomas Hutter travels to Transylvania in 1838 to sell a house. The big house of Count Orlok. Here, Thomas discovers that Orlok is an ancient vampire. After being captured, the vampire travels to Germany to seduce Thomas’ lonely wife Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp).
